Is. it normal to smile uncontrollably to piss people off??

I have a problem that ruined a big part of my life. Since around 2002 I started getting the strong urge to smile whenever it was inappropriate to do so. That urge evolved to the desperate need to do the smiling thing whenever I am dealing with someone important in my life. For example I would hear about the passing away of a friend's father and in the funeral I would't be able to hold this smirk that creeps up to my face whenever I am talking to someone, especially relatives of the deceased. Unfortunately this systematically destroyed my social life. I suspected that it was OCD, or maybe I'm possessed.. What do you think?

  • Yes, heaps of people do it.

It's not worth the risk though, it's a 50-50 thing.

You see, one person might get really bugged by it, another may just wreck that smile.

Sounds hilarious, you just need a new social network. A group of peers that shares your sick sense of humor.

  • I do this too. Its not on purpose either. I have a hard time controlling my facial expressions and they are often not congruent with how I feel. It does cause some problems but I also get told often that I am impossible to read. I seem to have minimal body language and facial expression and what I do have seems mostly random. I am not very good at reading other people either. You may have some sort of neurological issue that causes this because its not too common and most people don't understand. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done about it. For me its just automatic.

You might want to change that.

It can be one of two things (or I guess both or maybe something else).

You can either not know how to handle serious situations so you just sit there and smile (one of my friends does this occasionally)

or you're just a sadistic bastard. Which is okay too, we all have a dark side.

    • Thank you for your feed back. I thought of the second possibility, but knowing what I know about myself, I become quick to dismiss that possibility. This issue is seriously out of my control. Something tells me to just smile whenever it's hurtful the most to others, especially when they are close to me.

Maybe its your way to avoid the issue. Whenever I talk about my fathers death theres that big smile on my face . Frankly my smile is even bigger then when I am actually happy. Also, I got that bad habit to laugh when bad things happen . But I guess to have those reaction is some sort of defense mecanism , sort of if I smile its the same as nothing really happened. It's the ultimate way to banalize the situation. To make it ok and reduce the impact the situation have on you.

    Well, you're not possessed.

But you're probably insane for even considering that.

The same thing has happened to me. We were watching this documentary in class on WW 2 back when I was in high school and I suddenly started laughing and I couldn't stop. I know those people went through hell and I'm usually a caring sort of person, but its like my brain went weird or something... O_o

It's a little weird but more of a social expectation or convention that people react in appropriate ways depending on the circumstances. I used to smile and laugh as a child when I got caught doing something bad. The way I see it is kind of like a reverse psychology mechanism going on. It's similar to, for example, an to slap someone in the face after instead of shaking their hand when you first meet them. Your brain is playing tricks on you and constantly resorting to the worst case scenario possible.
