Is it normal to smell used bed pans

I work in a nursing home and I was wondering if it was normal to smell patient's used bed pans while they are watching. It wasnt a big deal until I did it to a patient that didnt have alzheimers. I was careless and didnt read the chart like I always do. I was sooooo stupid!
