Is it normal to sleep with the computer on?

I have grown used to the sound of my computer humming away in the background whilst I sleep in bed. I prefer not to sleep without it. Not saying there is anything wrong with this, but I am just curious as to whether or not this is normal (common)? Do many people find themselves doing this?

It's not normal, but I do it. 20

I normally have my computer updating programs, downloading/uploading, or doing scans so I just leave it plus the buzzing is relaxing :)

Other: I've done it before but I can't say I actually slept my best.

At least not unless I turn the monitor off.

As for the humming noise - that may be white noise you're sleeping too, coming from the fan. White noise is particularly good for sleeping since it can cover up other mild sounds that may be distracting you.

You may want to consider having a fan running instead of the computer however since keeping a computer on 247 may shorten its lifespan.

    • Yes, I turn off the monitor. It's just the sound I like.

A fan may be good though.

I been a computer junky since 1994 and have always left my computer on 24/7. Thee only time it shuts off when it's time for rebooting. Unless someone owns a junk for a computer, you can normally keep your computer running 24/7 every year. By the time it's ready to wear out, just trust me, you're about due for an upgraded computer anyways, or you'll be running an antique....

So this has answered the question if I sleep with my computer on to the person who created the poll.... YES, all the time!

O yeah I keep mine on 247 too, but I've also probably run it into the ground... and I should have closed the top when I wasn't using it more often. cos now the video brightness flickers. but it's been doing that for a year now too. although, it's also 4 years old now. :)

By any chance, are you using a laptop? .. If a laptop, they're not meant to run 24/7, only a desktop you can because they are the real work horse machine.. If it's a desktop you're using, it could be numerous things to the cause. Maybe a virus at one time. Could be the monitor. Might be the product machine you're using. Or could be a flute thing where you got unlucky with that particular computer. Or what about updates? Keeping sure with the updates with everything?

Sorry for the questions, and I'm sure you're a smart person. But these things can happen..

    • So you watch a program and leave the PC and monitor on after?

I used to leave the Xbox on, and play Halo 3, just so I could hear the menu music

I don't like to leave it on when sleeping because it's a totally unnecessary use of electricity and I'm not Mr-fucking-moneybags.

I leave it on because I listen to my night itunes playlist music at night. (My Ipod broke). I don't know why, but I show the visualizer even though I turn the lighting all the way down and I close my lap top more than half way...

it's not the computer it's the hum. Try sleeping with a fan on instead of your computer.

You'll probably get the same result... and it'll be easier on your electric bill

I think it's kinda normal, I mean, the sound of the computer humming does calm me down usually. But I don't go to sleep with it, that's just a total waste of electricity and money.

What if it overheats? Keeping your pc on 24/7 can shorten its lifespan

      Cooling system, perhaps? :D

Keeping a PC on for 24/7 doesn't actually affect it's lifespan.

I'll say the same thing here too... I been a computer junky since 1994 and have always left my computer on 24/7. Thee only time it shuts off when it's time for rebooting. Unless someone owns a junk for a computer, you can normally keep your computer running 24/7 every year. By the time the life span is about up, you're due for an upgraded computer anyways, or you'll be running an antique....

So again this has answered the question if I sleep with my computer on to the person who created the poll.... YES, all the time!

On Christmas Day last year, I left 1030 computers on while I slept. Well, 1030 cores, at any rate. Much fun having that kind of processing power. Even if I did have to wait until the one day no-one else wanted to use them.

Analysing a dataset of truly huge proportions for a colleague and also shaving off some clock cycles for two vanity projects of mine.

I didn't get any useful results and it'll be another 18 months before he publishes the research on his results.

I'd forgotten all about it until I read your post.

        • I often invite colleagues to picnics and sleepovers at our server farm. The humming is very restful, and I love watching at all the little bunnies that live there.
