Is it normal to sleep this much when you have sleep apnea?

I sleep about 14-16 hours a night on average. I got diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea last year and I use a CPAP machine now but I don't feel it helps much. I'm still sleeping a lot and when I'm awake I'm drowsy and feel tired all the time. It is also near impossible to wake me up. I have lost several jobs for being late / missing work. I've also heard people say that I'm tired because I sleep too much but I don't think thats it because when I've had jobs I've been forsed to sleep 8-10 hours a night regularlly and I'm even more tired during the day to where I can barely function. I've had this problem since childhood but I just gets worse as I get older. I am 27 and unlike most sleep apnea patients I am not over weight at all. I often will even sleep for 20 hours and more. Is this normal symptoms for someone with sleep apnea?

    • My doctor knows I sleep this much already. Doctors are never very helpful.

You may have something else wrong besides sleep apnea or your body is trying to make up for your low quality sleep due to the sleep apnea.

I understand the sleep problem. Due to I sleep up to 18 hours every day and then I have a nap on top of that due to I didn't feel loke I got enough sleep. My doc said to me that everyone is different when it comes to sleep. But its also I have depression, I have bipolar disorder & my meds knock me out.
So if ur on meds that could be why you want to sleep

I read recently about people who were diagnosed with chronic fatigue. They had their bloods tested and all were found to contain high levels of heavy metals, that they believe were poisoning their systems. I don't know enough about it but it would be worth getting it checked out by your doctor.

Whoah thats a ton of sleep.. over the last 3 or 4 days i have had 9 hours of sleep and I feel fine. I think you are getting a little too much sleep. Try a different approach. Good luck to you
