There is only one correct way to shake hands for the traditional handshake. It is not a contest to see who is weaker/stronger. I was told that the handshake was created to show or prove that you did not have a gun or weapon in your hand- as in the wild west when two men that were on "unfriendly" terms wanted to speak and not fight.
As for pressure, you don't want to cut off curculation or cause pain nor do you want the other person to think they are just holding a glove filled with warm mashed potatoes.
If it helps, try thinking of reaching for a door knob... don't you normally use just enough pressure to turn it? If you squeeze too hard, you're just wasting your energy. If you don't use enough pressure then you couldn't turn the knob.
Or think of hugging babies.
Hug too hard = 2 halves of 1 baby.
Hug not hard enough = baby rolling down stairs.
One thing to remember is that if you are shaking a woman's hand it is almost always because you don't know her very well or its a business relationship. So that's going to determine alot about the manner in which you shake her hand.
A lawyer once shook my hand and I thought he'd broken it! He was a real big guy and I nearly passes out with the pain.
No need for that!
Out of respect I was still squeeze however no where near as much as I would do to another male.
