Is it normal to self diagnose mental disorders?

More than making a question, I just want to complain.

Lately, everyone (especially in this site) just seems to recklessly claim to have some mental disorder. People are just like "OMG! Sorry, I am so bipolar!" or "I have Asperger, I didn't understand the joke"... Seriously? I think it is insulting for people that actually have to struggle with this conditions for all their lives.

In fact, I would go as far as saying that people should consult more than one expert before claiming to have a mental disorder. The diagnosis is sometimes subjective and it really depends on the therapist sometimes.

At some point, every single person in the world feels depressed, anti-social, with mood swings, self-destructive, etc. But it doesn't mean anything most of the time. People should just really stop trying to feel so special and realize that everyone has some issues.

So well, does anyone agree with me?

  • I have noticed people self diagnose things based off of symptoms that are not used to diagnose what they think they have. An example would be self diagnosing Asperger's due to social anxiety, or self diagnosing psychopathy due to hating people, or multiple personality disorder due to having a poor sense of self.

I have brought up my diagnoses here but I have been diagnosed by several doctors.
Some people who self diagnose are accurate but it seems there are more people who misdiagnose themselves.

Also 99% of online psych tests are invalid and make this problem worse such as the famous personality disorder test that will make anyone look crazy

I agree but stating a disorder is "Subjective" makes it completely invalid. A diagnoses should be OBJECTIVE not SUBJECTIVE. one person could say a female is selfish for not having sex with every single guy that asks. Does that mean this individual should be forced to give sex to everyone? or is the person saying this just a pervert?

The alphabet soup mental disorders, as I call them are usually made up by doctors of one sort or another in order to get their patients to spend as much as they can afford (or more in some cases)to treat non-existent conditions.
If you are diagnosed with one of these maladies, you have just as much, if not more, power to cure yourself and move on with your life, as any doctor has. But if you are lazy, unmotivated and spineless then you will sit around in a prescribed drugged out stupor, allowing your one and only life to slip away, unnoticed.
You may not choose to have a malady, but how you deal with it is all your choice.

I actually do have aspergers and I have been diagnosed with depression, and I can say that honestly, it hurts my feelings that you don't believe that many (if any) of these people actually do have the symptoms of these. In fact, more people nowadays are beginning to realize that these diseases are more normal than we previously thought.

For instance; my family has had depression or anxiety in almost every generation since they imigrated here from Ireland in the mid 19th century. I am indeed taking fluoxetine to help me cope with my depression.

I have no qualms with telling you people this, because, having these doesn't make you any less of a person; in fact, it is the very thing that makes you human. And besides, even if they are lying, how does it affect you?

It seems pretty normal to me, but its still stupid. Doctors can't diagnose themselves so why should non-doctors?

I don't believe in mental disorders. People should be happy with who they are, and the psychiatrists be damned to hell for feeling the need to judge them and label it as a bad disorder that needs to be "fixed." There are also many characteristics that people can exhibit, just because a psychiatrist doesn't think some of those are how it "should" be, doesn't mean that there is something wrong with you, caused by an imbalance of chemicals in your head, that you need to start taking medicine for in order to "fix."

I just watched a movie called "The Story of Luke" about a young man with autism. He has accepted himself, and loves himself, and is confident with himself, and he is just so sure of himself even while displaying symptoms of "autism" that is was so refreshing and nice to see how he lived his life. IMO, there is nothing wrong with this kid, and I can learn a thing or two from him.

These days, especially thanks to wikipedia and "ask a doctor dot com" (something like that) we can diagnose our own "mental illnesses" with the help of the internet and not some collegiate who has spent thousands for a sheet of paper that tells the public they are "certified" to "help" you.

Long story short and all matters aside, these days, its not surprising that we have a "diagnosis" for each and every single little fucking thing that if anything is just, human nature.

As a Human race: most evolved form of genealogy to date, we should learn to draw a line between clinically "crazy" and in need of help and the line between "medication" and over priced drugs that as it seems, more addictive then something like tobacco or alcohol.

There is therapy, there is "medication", and then there is a real understanding of the complex human mind.

Just because you have an "owie" doesn't mean you need a bandaid.
