Is it normal to say you are fond of the kid and don't mean it?

My best friend likes this girl with a kid but never says anything about the kid other that he is fond of her. Yet, he saids that he really like the mother and that she is hot. she was moving to be with her boyfriend and he wanted to spend time with her. He wanted to drink. So he drank the last two nights she was int town. He never brings up the kid on chats with her and did not even bothered to see the kid before she leaves. He said it would hurt too much yet he could see that girl he likes which he said hurts. He did not even seem to hurt when he left and he talks about that girl alot. I can tell when he is upset and he did not look like it. I have left a kid before. Had to say good bye to my niece and I never show emotions and everyone can see I was upset. I could hardly stand, yet for a kid he so called cared about he did nothing. He told me that we should go out to an zen gardern like none of this ever happens. So did he even really cared about the kid and is just lusting over the mother?
The times when I hung out with him and her he always tells her we should drink. And ask her what time we should go over there. She always tells us when her kid is in bed. He seems like he wants to get over there early. It is like he does not realize that she can't just go out unless she finds a babysitter. He even wanted to go to the strip club and go early like she can up and leave whenever she wants.
