Is it normal to say flexible hours but job is not flexible?

I had this job and I took it because it said flexible hours so I was happy. However after being hired I got all these times I had to be at the place no matter what? However it says in the job description that "the hours are flexible so you can easily work around your schedule". I was not aware that flexible meant only flexible except for these hours. Is this normal or did I just have a weird job? I would like to know for future reference. Since if this is what flexible hours is I know what to expect next time.

"Flexible hours" is code for "we expect you to work days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and any other damn time we say".

    • Well thank you for that. I will understand this next time. That actually explains a lot. Since the hours I had were horrible.

    • So what if you want flexible hours because you have to work around school and things as this. Do you not say "I want a flexible schedule"?

Good luck getting a job saying that.

Remember when lookimg for a job an employer isn't likely to hire you if you tell them what you want.

Maybe it would be better to tell them the advantages of having you as an employee, followed by something like "I am committed to my education, so I am looking for a job that will work with my class schedule."

        • Wait but what if you can not work certain hours? You are suppose to tell them what hours you are available.

With the way the job market is at the moment they will be more like to take the one who can do any hours.
