Is it normal to rely on anti-depresants as a means to stay happy?

I've been taking zoloft for almost 3 months now. It works great for me, I have never been happier in my life. This worries me though that I am now dependent on a pill (for an undetermined amount of time) to keep me happy.

Just think of it like a physical illness. Diabetics need to take insulin to control their blood sugar, you take Zoloft to stabilize your mood. It's there to help you help yourself. Sure you can start to feel better on your own, but that could take months or years for some people.

Seeing a counselor is good so you learn how to deal with things you can change on your own. I think everyone can benefit from seeing a therapist. xD

I agree, I see her as a close friend I can tell anything to. And thank you, that was very enlightening for me :)

  • I take fluoxetine, two pills a day and it helps me. But I don't like to think I'm relying on it for my happiness. I make my own happiness and the pills just support that. One day, I'll be able to be without them and so will you, we've just got to both get to our individual points where we can be like that :)

But if I think that my happiness is synthetic, it's like saying my emotions are synthetic and they're not. I just think of it as a little enhancement. I will note, I am prescribed my pills by a doc, I don't just take them lol.

You are doing something to help you,relax,3 months is nothing to get over your anxiety/depression problem, you will probably be popping them pills at least for another year.

Enjoy it,not everyone was the privilege to be happy everyday!

I feel like anti depressants are just as harmful as some illegal drugs in the long run. You might feel great at first, but then you basically become dependent just like the rest of us. This, coming from a pot head leading you to possibly have to take a larger dose, or a completely different drug in unison with that one to make it work better. I'm good I wanna get off of weed and never have to trust antidepressants because either way I will fell like an addict.

You're not going down the right path. If you keep doing this, your brain will be desensitized to the drugs.

I take Zoloft too. It's great. It makes the voices go away. I haven't tried to kill anyone in months.

Yeah, I see a counselor and I have a really good relationship with her. I've talked to her about it some. I initially started taking it for bad anxiety and depression but it has improved every aspect of my life (except sex... ruins your sex life) Sometimes I think my brain is just naturally unbalanced right now in my life and that in the future I could experience happiness of my own manufacturing. I guess only time will tell from here.

Also, could you reiterate your last sentence? I couldn't figure out what you meant. I appreciate your comment, thank you!

Have you tried speaking to your doctor about this? Maybe he or she could connect you with other alternatives to continue taking the pills but with moderation an possible activities,or maybe a psycholgist? It is possible you maybe going through a dependency due to some other deep rooted issues,in which case it is that more important to address it .also medication after awhile the effect wears off an you eventually will be taking it because you need it not to make you happy ..take care
