Is it normal to relapse off vicodin?

I have been addicted to vicodin for about 3 years now and recently decided to stop and get my life back. I was taking anywhere from 15-20 a day and it was consuming my life. I have lost a job because of them and currently am going through legal troubles because of my addiction. I decided to stop and did for 10 days, but 4 days ago (and I don't know why) relapsed. My question is , is it normal to relapse after doing do good for 10 days or am I doomed and a complete loser?

Relapse is a natural part of recovery.. It reminds you that you are powerless to your addiction. Stay strong and get supportive people around you to hold you accountable!

I'm so proud of you for even trying to stop. I helped my friend stop taking them, he was addicted for 5 years taking 30mg 4x a day. He couldn't do it alone so he gave me the pills. The only way he could handle it was a very very very slow taper. I mean I kept giving him a dose 4x a day, but dropped the milligrams by 2 or 3 per dose every few days. This way he didn't feel any withdrawals and didn't relapse and take a huge dose. It took him 5 months to go gradually from 30mg : 28: 26: 24: 22: 20: 18: 16: 15: 12: 10: 7.5: 5: 2.5 to zero, but it worked. I figured it was the only way to do it right. That was a year ago and he never relapsed. The key was frequent doses, but less and less of it and at YOUR OWN comfort level. Good luck.

I have lived through the exact same situation. 15-20 ten mg tabs a day. Your story sounds just like my recent past. Legal troubles, drug court, everything. The only thing that kept me from relapse was methadone. I was embarassed at first but it saved my life. Eventually weaned off methadone and just finished my court issues. Hang in there. When Opiates take hold, it's hard to get your life back. But you will. Hopefully I won't relapse, but stats show that I probably will. It's a disease.

Perfectly normal, considering you were addicted to them. Chances are you are entering "no mans land". Can't live with them. Can't live without them. I thoroughly understand because I've been there! I encourage what has worked for me and I've worked hard for it. That is twelve step recovery. AA,NA do one thing and one thing very well. That is, to allow you to recover from your addiction. I got to where I couldn't go three days on will power alone. After some 12 step recovery, I have over two years clean, and have a joyful life. I was deemed as a hopeless case. If I can do it, so can you. Many Blessings

I agree with the first comment, I know a lot of addicts in the same boat as you, go to some NA or AA meetings. They have worked wonders in the lives of those I know
