Is it normal to refuse to talk in social situations?

At school, I have a group of friends but when we are in a circle talking, I just stand there and observe. It doesn't feel right to talk, so I don't. If I don't have anything to contribute to the conversation, I shouldn't say anything, right?

You can still try to participate a bit more by showing you're interested in what others are talking about. Smiling, laughing, nodding and making encouraging sounds at the right time. Be a more active listener, in other words.

Fine if you don't have anything to say but don't waste something worth saying by not saying it.

I literally can't talk around people. It's not selective mutism then it's not be able to speak coherently. Before this, I would often be too shy or talk too much with my friends. It's normal.
