Is it normal to put pizzas in a conventional oven without oven trays?

A few months ago I had someone over and I put the pizzas we were cooking in the oven straight onto the wire racks with no metal tray for them. Is it normal?

    If it gets the job done, then why not. But wouldn't The melting cheese make a mess in the oven?

        Well if your oven is not clean before you put it in yeah. Also how do you get it out if its only on the tray? How do you pull it out without breaking the pizza or touching the metal tray?

    yeah, it says it on the back of most pizza boxes I thought. It's if you want a crispier pizza.
