In Britain, it's traditional to drink black tea with milk. Black tea is the tea everybody drinks here, so much so we don't even bother calling it black, it's just 'tea'. It's unusual not to add milk to black tea in the UK.

Other types of tea are far less popular here and are usually drunk without milk.

I've never had tea with milk and it just sounds disgusting to me. But I wouldn't mind trying it.

  • I have my tea just like my coffee, straight up. Nothing added.

What? I don't know if it's just because of where I am but here we almost always have milk in our tea. If someone makes you tea here, it's automatically assumed you want milk in it; you have to specify if you ask someone to make you it and don't want any.

I personally love milk with tea and have sugar with it too. Gives it a nice, somewhat sweet taste. Perfect to drink while eating chocolate too. Yum.

I drink fusions and green tea. So no milk for me.

Unless it is the milk of a pregnant African tribal queen. Then I might add that particular milk for added strength.

Usually just tea. I read something a while ago that said, particularly for men I think, that putting milk in tea sort of cancels out the benefits of the tea. Of course that's all I can recall about it.

Almost everybody in England drinks tea that way. I'm American and I like tea with milk :)

Yeah I was in the audience. Robert Webb kept messing up his lines and getting frustrated.

It is good. I wonder if they'll do any more. Do you watch Peep Show?

          • Yeah peep show is funny as. It wouldn't be easy to nail some of his lines, especially the crazy Sir Digby rants.

I watch alot of English comedy, they're just better at it than the rest of us. I always wished they'd make more of Black Books but :(

Do you mean chai (chai means tea), as in Masala chai? I lived with a British Indian girl and the way they prepare it is slightly different - it usually involves bringing the tea, milk and water to the boil in a pan before serving, rather than simply adding milk to already brewed tea.

The flavour is slightly different due to the boiled milk - it's richer. I personally find it quite sickly on its own (without other flavouring).

Masala chai traditionally uses various spices in addition to the tea; cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, ginger, cloves etc. are all found frequently in recipes for Masala Chai (or spiced chai).

In this case I don't think OP is referring to Masala chai. I think they're just talking about tea with added, unboiled milk.

you are right, chai means tea.

but also there is a drink called choi that is drunk on special days. it is normal black tea, with milk in it. some people also add cardamon, since it is really popular in these countries i mentioned earlier.

I like my tea without anything in it, not even sugar. But you can put in milk, sugar, honey, probably other stuff too.

Is it normal that I never knew you could put milk in tea until just a few days ago? I just read it in a manga and so I thought it must not be true because the guy was sick and disoriented when he had put it in his tea.

I drink mine without anything or with a little sugar.

Milk enhances the flavor. My entire family does it. I would not drink hot tea without milk. Sweet tea is different though like it cold with ice.

The milkman has come for your daily milking session.

      Don't make a fuss.

When he's done your milk will be delivered door to door.
