Is it normal to purge when depressed?

Is it normal that when I get really upset or depressed about something, I find the only thing I can do to relieve the pain I am in is to stick my fingers down my throat and vomit?

I don't have an earing disorder, it's not about getting thin or weight loss, it's purely because I find it almost thereputic afterwards

sadjklfhls;';;zfldskjaklz\bangingmyheadonthekeyboardtothnthdegree at like half of these comments. No, it's not normal. Yes, it is an eating disorder because EDs are not about wanting to lose 40 lbs to fit into that swimsuit for spring break in Cancun. What you just described is EXACTLY how an eating disorder works; you're sad/upset/angry/etc. and so you take it out on your food by purging, not eating, binging, jogging non-stop for 82 hours straight and so forth. Wanting to lose weight may never enter into the equation - it's still an ED.

I'm so fucking serious, go get help. Please.

it's somewhat common, but very unhealthy. you're going to become severely underweight and have other problems.

whatever you're depressed about, there are other ways to feel better. maybe you should take anti-depressants. or talk to someone about your problems. it can be a friend, family member, counselor, or whoever.

  • I understand the need to purge, because being upset can sometimes make you nauseous. However puking all the time really takes a toll on your body, so I'd try to find another way to cope. Listen to metal when you get mad =D That always helps me.

You really should get out of that habit. It's not healthy, and you might find yourself doing it more often. Stop it now, before its too late.

I'll be honest, I don't think it's normal. But. I do the same. It's a form of relieving yourself of those negative feelings and in that sense can be viewed as a form of self harm. So no, not normal and I voted no. I don't think it constitutes an eating disorder. Rather "disordered eating".

You may want to try a fast or detox diet. Purging can be very theraputic but I don't recommend it as a long term solution to your problem. The purge is a quick fix that masks the root of the problem. It's just temporary. Your body is likely toxic and needs a deeper cleaning than what vomit can offer.
