Is it normal to pretend to be another gender online?

Ok so heres the story. I have a roleplaying guild for the online games SWTOR and Guild Wars 2 and though this guild I met a girl named "E". E would post pictures of herself on our guild's website, and after seeing how beautiful this girl was (in addition to playing Star Wars, I mean c'mon, a dream girl for a guy like me)

I began to talk to her. We started talking more and more and eventually started texting each other. Then things took a turn for the weird. Soon after, we began sending fairly dirty messages to each other, and after a while, it was full on sexting at random intervals during the day.

Some bullshit happened, and after catching E in a few lies, I began to put the pieces together in discovering that E wasnt a woman at all, but in fact a man. Today, after months of talking, E revealed to me that he was in fact a male and had been lying to me for months. My question is this.

Is it normal for people (particularly men) to pretend to be females online in order to trick hopelessly romantic nerds like myself into thinking they are female and start an online relationship?

Because while this seems pretty fucking rare, I have a sneaking suspicion that this is far more common than I'd like to believe.

Sorry that happened. But I do imagine that a lot of guys do that. As my brother told me "Rule #1 of the internet: everyone's a guy."

Well, I hate to be negative to you, but that's why you have to be careful with who you talk to online. You never know who is behind the screen. For all we know, I could be Hitler, having faked my own death but is still alive due to a giant machine that supports my brain activity. Now whether or not this is true, I'm not willing to admit ;) But I think that you may have learned a valuable lesson in all this.

I don't know if you ever heard the story, but it was on Dateline a few years back in which a man swore he was in love with a beautiful, blonde model. He ignored his wife and kids to spend time, online with this girl. It came down to the point where she found someone else (who was a lot younger and handsome) to talk to. The guy became jealous and killed the other guy. It didn't really get sad until the end, however, whenever he found out the the blonde model, was actually her old, haggish mom using her daughter's photo to pretend to be her.

I'm glad your story didn't end as devestating as hers, but let's look at this more as a learning experience.

Well, I didnt get nearly as involved as your example did, and the only reason I went along with this in the first place was b/c I havent had a g/f...well...ever. If I had a wife and a kid, the last thing I would be doing would be chatting online with a random "supermodel". But I see what your trying to say, however negative it may be.

Maybe he was just gay and didn't know how to tell you if you have feelings for him then you should go for it. Love is love #NoH8

I think it is more common that a woman would pretend to be a man, at least for an online relationship. If he was just using you for sex, then I'd say that's somewhat normal. He's probably pretended to be a woman because he's actually gay, and didn't want you to leave him or whatever.

And this, my friends, is why you don't try to meet women by playing the video games. You have to go outside.

Omg first just reading the title I was going to say yes but the. Reading the story I say no. It's normal or a guy to have a gurl character because of like let's say sometimes other characters are just nicer to girls than they are guys or for whatever other strategic reason but like going all the way as to be sexting that is just wrong..

well obviously in hindsight i would do things differently, but shit the prospect of finding a really amazing chick was far too good to pass up and I really ignored some glaring warning signs just praying and hoping it was all real

    oh well, live and learn
