Is it normal to pretend to be another gender online?
Ok so heres the story. I have a roleplaying guild for the online games SWTOR and Guild Wars 2 and though this guild I met a girl named "E". E would post pictures of herself on our guild's website, and after seeing how beautiful this girl was (in addition to playing Star Wars, I mean c'mon, a dream girl for a guy like me)
I began to talk to her. We started talking more and more and eventually started texting each other. Then things took a turn for the weird. Soon after, we began sending fairly dirty messages to each other, and after a while, it was full on sexting at random intervals during the day.
Some bullshit happened, and after catching E in a few lies, I began to put the pieces together in discovering that E wasnt a woman at all, but in fact a man. Today, after months of talking, E revealed to me that he was in fact a male and had been lying to me for months. My question is this.
Is it normal for people (particularly men) to pretend to be females online in order to trick hopelessly romantic nerds like myself into thinking they are female and start an online relationship?
Because while this seems pretty fucking rare, I have a sneaking suspicion that this is far more common than I'd like to believe.
