Is it normal to prefer to live in an earlier time?

I wish that I could go back in time to like the 1950s, I just really feel that it would've been a nicer world for someone like me. I hate the crazy, fucked up, hostile, skeptical, distrusting world of today. Nobody trusts anybody, nobody gives two shits about anybody but themselves, and everyone judges each other so superficially in every way. I know that there was more racism back then, I'm not saying it was perfect, but when looking at all the problems with society today, I still feel it was better overall back then. Not during the 1930s though because of the Depression and not during WW2 during the early 1940s, but the years after the war, the late 1940s through the 1950s when the economy was booming again. The roaring 1920s would've been great too I think. I realize it's impossible to travel back in time, but there's nothing wrong with dreaming, is there? Is it normal to wish to go back to the time periods I've mentioned and to feel that the world was a nicer place back then?

I wish I could travel beck in time to this morning. People were so much nicer to each other then. And the fashions and music were so much better than this afternoon's.

    • People are often more stressed out in the afternoon after a hard day at work, driving in rush hour traffic, etc. However, some people are moodier in the morning and really not morning people. It depends on the person, and/or what kind of day someone had, how much traffic/road rage bullshit they gotta deal with where they are, etc.

My response above was if your answer was serious. I also picked up on the possibility that your answer may have been kind of smartass and you're being funny saying that human nature, fashion and music has changed in half a day. All I say to that is haha 😂 lol very funny

I should have been born into the neolithic revolution, it's not fair. The made up word for this is anemoia - a sort of nostalgia/pining for a time you've never known.

Too much racism, sexism and no internet or cell phones. I will pass.

    • Even though racism was worse and women were more often treated as secondary, which I wouldn't have done myself at all, women also were treated more like ladies and less like sexy pieces of ass, and same with women treating men. And I like how women wear softer spoken and more feminine in the old fashioned traditional sense. Sorry, my opinion. Overall, it really was a more trusting world back then. And people were more simple and less complicated. And in my opinion, better films and music. And it was classier, most guys wore suits, and women were almost never seen not wearing a dress

      • Did you ever even live back then, or do you just watch those informational films that are obviously slanted to only show the good parts of American 50's living?

The way you're generalizing like people were all peachy seems quite ignorant. Also, being trusting is stupid. We are how we are now because we've learned that that was a mistake.

Human nature has not changed, so lock your doors and look out for your kids.

Approach people with the nuanced perspective that they could be a great person, but they could also be a dangerous one. Always keep an open mind, and an open eye.

Socrates once said, "All that I know, is that I know nothing."

        (Also, what RoseIsabella said).

          • It's a good quote. But, there are alot of people today who still know nothing.

        • Were you around back then? How would you know that people were the same? They were not the same, and I never said that everything was peachy back then, I just said that some things were better in some ways,, and they were definitely better in my opinion. And people didn't trust each other more back then because they didn't know anything, they trusted each other more because they gave each other more reason to, and stopped trusting each other later because people changed, every new generation had learned new ways to get what they want without playing by the rules. But, I never said everyone played by the rules in the 1930s and 1940s. But, people today really do go to further extremes, every new generation has done new things that has surprised the older generations. I've done plenty of reading up on the era in every way. I've also googled crime statistics of some of these earlier times. And it's common logic that when crime goes up, trust towards others and feeling of peace towards others goes down. And crime has gone up, look it up.

Are you talking about the United States? Because violent crime in the US is the lowest it's ever been. I know it sounds hard to believe because some media(ie Fox News) and some politicians(the current President, for example) love to scare people, but it's the truth. The last time violent crime was this low might've been the 1950's, but data before 1960 is extremely unreliable. The perception of crime has gone up, actual crime has plummeted.

EDIT: and just FYI, you can't use the argument "how would you know that people were the same if you weren't around back then" when you weren't around back then either.

I'm a Southern woman, and I'm proud of that, but if I were living during the time of Jim Crow I wouldn't be able to be quite so proud of that part of my heritage. I also don't really think I should be forced to behave and present myself as especially feminine in order to please society. I haven't worn a dress or heels, not even to church, since my grandmother's funeral back in 2009.

Also I LOVE the way information is literally always at my fingertips and moments away today! Sure, there are things that are nice about the past, but I sure as Hell wouldn't want to go back to the days where people were so repressed. No Punk Rock or Alternative music to listen to sounds depressing as Hell to me.

If you want to live and present yourself in a more 50s vintage sort of style that's fine. However, society was way too chauvinistic back in those days. Fuck that shit!

As far as I'm concerned a pair of jeans or jeans shorts, some 10 eyelet vintage made in England Doc Martens with whatever damn blouse, sweater or t-shirt I want to wear and some red Channel lipstick is classic to me! I prefer to mix my femininity with a healthy dose of I can kick someone's ass if I need to do so.

        • I expected that there would be alot of people here that don't want things to be the way they used to be, become if they did, things would be still more like that. And that's fine if that's how you feel, I was just stating how I feel.

          Comment Hidden ( show )
        • I do understand some of your feelings on why you believe it was worse back then, the chauvinism, and the repression of women and feeling like they need to look more traditionally feminine in order to please society is definitely something most modern women don't want back. But thinking has changed. Back then, alot of women were happy being in those types of roles and pleasing people, and they would've looked at today as foreign and discomforting. Overall, there's no right or wrong way, it's about people's feelings on what is most comfortable to them, and that is what's changed over the decades due to changes in people's upbringing, surroundings, and what they have known best. And it's understandable how women today who have spent their lives being taught that it's ok to be just as assertive and aggressive as men would not want to go back to a more repressed time.

Also, I understand that if you love punk rock, alternative music, etc. that to suddenly go back to a time where it doesn't exist yet and to really not like that is understandable, and if we were to go back to those times, we would miss it because we're seeing something getting taken away from us after experiencing the pleasure of indulging in it. But it would be different if we never have indulged the pleasure. People in the 1930s and 1940s couldn't have missed things that they'd never known, just like they couldn't miss tv if they or nobody anywhere ever had one. Internet's the same idea, and I agree with you that I love the convenience of everything at our fingertips, we're taking advantage of that now as we speak on this site.

Like I said before, your thoughts, and other people's thoughts on then vs now are understandable, I've just been clearly stating my opinions. I've not said and won't say what is officially right or wrong for others, I've just been saying how I personally feel and asking just out of curiosity if there are others who share my opinions.

"alot of women were happy being in those types of roles and pleasing people,"

You have no way of knowing this. They had no choice but to be in those types of roles. They weren't allowed to get jobs, they weren't allowed to get an education, they weren't allow to get a divorce. That's like saying a lot of black people in the south were happy being slaves. (I use this as an example because a lot of racists actually use that argument.)

In addition to the racism and sexism, don't forget about the bigotry and homophobia. That was also a really bad time for LGBTQ folk.

Basically, the 1950s were much, much worse for everybody except for straight white Christian man who have a general lack of empathy...then things were probably better for you. Unless, of course, you got sick or hurt. We haven't even brought up the incredible improvements in modern medicine. Life expectancy was 10 years lower in 1950 than it is today, and that doesn't even factor in quality of life while living.

You have every right to have your own opinion, but I find it highly unlikely that you would still feel this way if you actually experienced life in 1950 compared to today.

    • Traveling back in time is impossible unfortunately, but I need moments where I can escape into my little old fashioned world at home when I put one of my many 1930s or 1940s films into my dvd player, or watch one on YouTube, there are lots of old films free on YouTube, or upload some 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and early 1950s music. All the stuff I love is pre 1955, pre rock era. I agree with you, the roaring twenties would have been awesome, booming economy, speakeasies, people really had fun. I wish traveling back in time was possible.

Haha, I do the same at home but mostly with music, like Dina Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and the likes. Oh, and sometimes I wear vintage dresses to really get the feels of it!!! My favorite way to cook on a weekend!

        • That's cool that you like alot of things from the old days, listen to the music and wear dresses from then. Sounds like you have more in common with me than alot of the commenters on this page, how could they think that people are so much nicer to each other, have better values, and are more honest today?

It's highly likely we have a lot in common! :D

I think the values today are similar, though. They're just shown/expressed in a different way.

Today I asked my 70-something-year-old mother if she liked the world we live in today better than before and if she missed those times. It turns out she doesn't!!

I want to go to the 1800's. So much simpler. I like the clothes and the home decor, and the men seemed so handsome back then. Maybe it was the suits a lot of them wore. I like the intricately carved furniture. Fascinating!

Yes it's normal. It may be normal but it's boring! Living in a fuddy duddy time of the 1950s, I myself am and have pursued for months living in the past. In fact it's all about what I was born with. It's also about growing up no longer doing stuff kids do, like popular music, candy, and cordial.
