Is it normal to prefer to have no gift rather than one you didn't like

Hiya,

I just don't see the point of a gift I don't want or like, that will only be given away. People buy you gifts you wouldn't buy yourself, and there's usually a reason why.

Somebody once got me a foot spa – my legs don't work! (D'OH!) Now I always write what I’d like down and say (politely) you can get me any of that or nothing.
Luckily family/friends know the type of thing I like – usually a cd that they can't get.

I just wonder how they'd feel if the boot was on the other foot ….....

Just from the point of view of environmentalism, unwanted gifts hurt my head. Can you imagine a society that would invest in the manufacture of something, knowing that a percentage of people will throw it away unused because it's tat?

I like what Amazon do, in letting you create wishlists and then people buy something off the list. You never get duplicates of things, you get what you actually want, Amazon make money, and nothing goes to waste.

      This.

I'm sure there are hundreds of stupid little trinkets in the dump right now. My aunt likes to get those little trinkets as gifts but she is a hoarder. Now I just ask if there is something that they want.

It's always kind of annoying to get a gift you don't care for, especially if it's from someone who should know you better. Personally, I'd rather just not get a gift at all than something that will just sit around and collect dust until I can get rid of it again.

    Hiya,

    I’m sorry about your father.

Amazon are amazing! I’ve got CDs from there that areso good I get teary-eyed just thinking about them, they've been played and played and played and I still love them, and I wouldn't care if I never got another present again.

If the person getting the present isn't disabled, unless they're really close to them and/or see them a lot, they don't tend to think. I've had to pass half my presents on. The worst thing is when whoever's got you the present sits in the room with you watching your reaction to said absolutely horrible gift.

The worst thing would be to get nothing because there's nobody to give you it ….......

My Dad was dying from ALS and someone gave him running shoes. They thought they were his style. They realized how tasteless it was and admitted they didn't think. They thought he was still able to walk when he was only a week away from dying.

I think it depends on what the gift is. My friend mailed me a hideous gold necklace (I hate {yellow} gold) for Christmas. It's still sitting on my dresser. I have absolutely no use for it, so I'd rather not have gotten it at all.
My boyfriend got me one of those bath and body works fragrance kits for mother's day..in a scent that I don't like and he knows I have sensitive skin and can't use any of the things in there anyway. I gave it to my mom and she liked it :}.

I have an aunt that knits me a turtle neck wool sweater with horrible Christmas images on them every year! I found a good use for them at ugly sweater parties but I still have no idea what to do with the matching socks. Have you ever tried to wear knitted wool socks? It's terrible!

I agree, and for the same reason I hate occasions gift giving is expected, because unless I just happen to find the perfect thing I'm afraid they'll feel that about what I give them.
