Is it normal to ponder how much plastic is in the ocean?

In the days before people learned to synthesize plastics, people often pondered how much tea there is in China.
A new report suggests that we might have vastly underestimated how much plastic is in the oceans. It seems that our best scientists can't even figure out how much plastic is in the oceans.
For the next generation, will they ponder how much plastic is in the oceans?

I'm guessing a few trillions. Plastic is not good for the environment and it takes forever for it to break down. There's should be more of a global effort to recycle or to go back using glass.

    Yes.
Whenever I am finished with a recyclable bottle or can, and I go to throw it away, I have a conversation with myself.

I imagine all of the plastic in the ocean. Then I think, well, it's just one bottle. And then I think, they were all, at some point, just one bottle. Recycling is free, unlike buying a Prius. Then I throw the bottle in my trunk to recycle next week.

What you're thinking is more normal than what I think.

My best guess is a 'shitload'.

Why waste time trying to figure out something that's impossible to know? Time would be better spent on keeping more from getting in there, and other such things.

Sadly, there might be MUCH than we have estimated!

Case in point, I love watching the survival shows Man vs. Wild and Survivorman, and many times you will find them on the shores of the ocean, in the remotest part of the world finding trash on the beach. It's sad really that it has come to that, but it's the truth and we need to do a better job of cleaning and maintaining it.

I once saw a documentory about it. scientists believe that there is a 'plastic-carpet' of at least the size of middle-europe in the oceans. but you normally cannot see it because it's about metre under the water - so the oceans look clean but they aren't.

I am very concerned, but most ppl are so ignorant and don't care about that. Kinda funna that those ppl have kids of their own and don't waste a thought about what kind of pollution their kids may have to suffer from in the future..

I would rather spend my time to ponder how stupid people can actually get...
