Is it normal to play songs and feel upset?

Certain songs remind me of some pretty shitty things that happened in the past. When I hear the songs, it's like I feel the emotion I did back then. They make me sad, but I still listen to them because I like the songs.

Songs are very good at invoking certain emotions or memories... Hurt by Johnny Cash is an incredible song but it always invokes sadness.

It's a sign of a good song if it can make you feel emotional :)

It's a great song! It's actually one of the songs I was referring to, that has bad memories with it. Other songs are The Howls of the Wolves by Nightrage, Back to School by the Deftones and Something I Can Never Have by NIN (Or the Flyleaf cover)

It's COMPLETELY normal. I too get really emotional for certain songs, like "Wake me up when September ends" and "Good Riddance" by Green Day because of the memories that I associate with them.

I can hardly bear to listen to I Remember That by Prefab Sprout, and Broken by Teenage Fanclub.

For me street spirit and videotape by radiohead, after the storm by mumford and sons, you could be happy by snow patrol and a piano cover of motion picture soundtrack also by radiohead

Same thing happens to me too. I consider myself really passionate about music though. I started crying once when I listened to the violin being played in the song sometime around midnight by; the airborne toxic event. It sounds pathetic to most people, but it really got me thinking of some seriously painful memories.

this song, ( you can find the album version on youtube cause i think there was a dispute or copy right thing ) is one of my favorite when im really down and in a "black" mood

it doesnt cheer me up so much as it take my problem (anger, depression, etc.) and slowly feeds them to a fire burning them from my mind

I usually associate music with a memory. If the memory is good then I'll play the song a lot. I think you're normal, but try incorporating more happier moments in your life.

Sounds like you need to search for new music. They shouldn't make you sad anymore if they're in the past. Remember the good things. Not the bad.
