Is it normal to paint over a bruised nail?

Just a little bit concerned, about 4 months ago I wore some shoes to work for a while that were too tight on my toes and they bruised both my big toe nails. I've been painting over them so that they aren't visible but recently a friend asked me if that was bad for the bruised nail and I didn't know. I hadn't even thought about it. I googled it but nothing. If anyone knows anything that would be really helpful, thanks guys! xx
