Is it normal to outdo my friend's boyfriend's birthday gifts?

So, me and my house mate are super close but not in a relationship or anything (she has a boyfriend and I'm gay). It's coming up to her 21st birthday so I thought I'd push the boat out with gifts this year in particular. However... I'm nervous that by spending so much, I might spend more on her than her boyfriend might. They've been together for about four months but they're pretty close.

He's a friend of mine too, so I don't want to make him look bad. Should I go ahead anyway? Should I tell him what I'm planning to buy? Should I ask if he's interested in putting towards?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Wow. Yor are a very considerate person. Like Radar said. It's good to ask the boyfriend. (You can also ask if he wants to put towards your plans, but think about it. He wants a gift that is his own to give to her..)

    :) Good Luck

You sound really thoughtful. Maby i'm just a bit of an idiot though because something like that wouldn't even cross my mind
