Is it normal to only think in the moment and not towards the future?

I started thinking back to highschool (I'm only 21) and I remember when not getting the lead in a play felt like the end of my life. I started thinking and I realized that my friends had the same problem. They would cry for a week if they didn't get the part they wanted. It's funny to look back and realize all the stupid crap meant NOTHING.

Is it normal for people (not just young people) to think only in the moment??

I realize I would of been much happier in high school if I had let go of the little things and had just realized that they wouldn't matter five years from now..heck they barely mattered five months from now.

I think you should live in the moment. Like don't let something simple ruin your day but realistically we don't know if we'll even live to tomorrow. So you might as well live in the moment and try to get as much joy as you can. That, however, does not mean be an asshole.

I want this skill!! I think of the future so much lately. I feel all this stressful thinking starts at the beginning of grade 12 when they're telling you to either go to college/uni or be a failure. I finished college, and I have a great job, but I feel like a societal casualty xP Once you get in the swing of the whole looking forward thing, it's hard to enjoy the present. You're always working towards something.

Really? I think everyone only thinks in the moment. That's why the world is as screwed up as it is.

  • It's a symptom found most often among the foolish. Be wise; look ahead.
