Is it normal to only like non-vocal music?

I strongly dislike vocal music. Quite often I will be listening to a new song, expecting it to be instrumental from start to finish, but then some harpie breaks in to a shrill and annoying vocal line, at which point I turn off my radio as quickly as possible. My favorite genres are classical music (mainly piano) and various types of jazz (which tends to be non-vocal). Is this normal, or should I force myself to enjoy high pitched screeching for the sake of keeping up with the Joneses?

  • Different people get different things out of music.

This song, "Immunity" by Jon Hopkins, has some voice but it sounds very instrumental---actually I have no clue if he's actually singing words or not. The addition of his voice is beautiful.

There's something hypnotic about this song and I quite like the damper pedal being used in a percussive way.

You could turn the radio off because it's often full of shit. And find vocals you do like, not every singer is a high pitched screecher.

100% agree, ditch the poser out front and replace with never ending guitar solos.

Hahaha... high pitched, shrill shrieking harpies, does your radio only play death metal; is it possessed by the devil?

I never liked it either, well i didn't hate it, but the kind of music i like most has no words.. what doyou think of songs with voice samples though? and i dont mean sampling from famous singers, or singing at all, some of my favorite music just has clips of various people talking and i always enjoyed that

I know what you mean. There are some songs that are mainly instrumental until they get to a part and suddenly there's singing. Sometimes, I don't like when this happens because, I find that there's something in the voice which ruins the song. However, there are some songs where in this isn't an issue. It really depends.

Okay, I don't mean to be odd about it but how often do you listen to songs you imagine are instrumental, only to be interrupted by the hounds of Zeus?

I've listened to songs loads of times without being interrupted by mythological phenomena. Something weird is happening with you if things that don't exist are shouting themselves alive for the reason of an IIN story about music.

If you believe what you believe, it's time for an exorcism. If you don't believe this stuff, maybe just have a nice walk somewhere.

    • Actually the hounds of zeus would be metal vocals, whereas I was talking about harpies, which I find that most (non smoker) female singers bear an unfortunate resemblance to.
I am not schizophrenic by the way, and the descriptions in my post were not meant to be taken literally.
I do however thank you for your concern, and will consider an exorcism if I ever encounter mythological creatures whilst listening to music.

You like what you like. To me certain singers' voices sound like beautiful instruments.

Just wondering, who would your favorite singer be? For me it'd be Jeff mangum ( even though I hated it at first) and Lisa hannigan, she has a beautiful voice.

I'd never heard of Lisa Hannigan and from listening right now I like her a lot so far :)

Oh, my favorite singer? That's a fucking tough one you asked there, mister! I'll try to narrow down. For many many years in a heartbeat I'd say Madeleine Peyroux. When you look at my last fm profile she's the most played artist overall.

Despite being eclectic in my taste, I have two main preferences musically, which makes it quite hard to single one out from different musical genres. So, out of the bluesy soul artists, today (it varies), I say Sam Cooke. Out of the hipster indie ones, as far as voices go, I'll say Karen O's is one of the most exquisite. And male has got to go to Jack White! Everything he touches is just insane! Oh, wait, but maybe he wouldn't be best vocalist, but best musician.

Ah cool got some musicians to look up :)
And yeah I love Lisa, I think of it as comfort music, it's simple but her voice is fucking beautiful especially on lille ( it's all about her first album)
I'm a stripes fan, I heard Jack has solo work but I never checked it out, I'll give it a listen :)

Ooooooh, for Jack you could maybe try the Dead Weather!!! Alison Mosshart from The Kills does vocals.

I remember reading a review of midnight boom? Bloom? One of the two and making a note of it!

    • I know that not all singers are as I described, although most of them do fit the bill nowadays.
I do find some folk music highly enjoyable, but the vast majority of vocal music is just not my cup of tea.

        The decemberists are good too
