Is it normal to not want to waste my life doing as i'm told?

Is it normal to have a problem with working my entire life and having people tell me how I should live MY life? Such as what I can do, what I cant do.
Why the hell should I have to work a 9-5 until im 80 and cant control when I shit myself? How are other people going to tell me whats right for me? Why am I not allowed to do things like... eat mushrooms and trip balls all day if I'm not affecting anyone but myself? (Im not a drug addict, its an example, dont flame me.)

Something so beautiful as life shouldnt be wasted slaving away to pay off a mortgage or a car..
We should be free to do as we please, if not then whats the purpose of existing at all?
As far as we know this is the only chance we have, why not live it up and experience as much as possible instead of staying inside the house hoarding material things?

I just dont understand how people have become so complacent with the restrictions on life nowadays. Any thoughts?

No no no. Be true to yourself. Not everyone is meant to be the "boss." And the best bosses are the ones who treat you like an equal.

People fall victim to the 9-5 in a dead end job to pay their bills. We keep behaving as if "stuff" matters. We need food, shelter, and clothing. Everything else only perpetuates the problem. We cannot continue to live as if our resources are limitless. When they go, you will be in pain. Figure it out. Now!

White 23, I like your free spirited nature and zestful outlook in life. ;) it's a fact that we live this life once and the very fact that we are mere mortals makes us question the way we should live it, and hence the philosophy of what a meaningful life should be. Unfortunately we are inundated with a series of propaganda just so we may continue to support the system of things. Not ignoring the fact that we do need a basic capability to preserve our livelihood, I feel it's about living a purposeful life. And that really is not something which anyone can tell you how to live it.

Well that would be nice, to be god of your own reality.
But killing yourself is a lame way out haha (personally i think if you want to commit suicide its your choice and there shouldnt be a law against it but thats a different discussion)

But back to the matrix thing... That would be fun for a while.. a long while.. but theres still the REAL world and id rather struggle to create a perfect world here, and likely fail, than be content with a fake one.

I totally agree. I wish that someone made something like the matrix where everyone had there own world and could do anything they wanted. they could make money from thin air. make codone from thin air. make people who they liked from thin air. and live stress free, happy lives. I want this soooooo bad and want to kill myself just because life isnt like that.

I seen the quote on a gaming forum, no idea were it originates from haha.

But im currently saving up money for a trip to Europe and the UK,Ive always wanted to travel and see other cultures.
I really want to visit every country eventually, pick my favorite, buy some land and have a self sufficient house. I may have to get some kind of part time (or less) job to pay for food or some other wants i may have but it wont be as mind killing as an everyday thing.
Id have to buy my own island to live the way i really want :p

Lol, yeah that's what I came up with when I googled it.

I'm planning (sorta planning - no actual plan) a trip too. Also, I figure that if I stay more or less on the move later, things will actually be cheaper since I would have to cut out all the crap that I don't need. I haven't gotten to the settling down part.

It seems that the more self sufficient you are, the freer you are.

Good luck with Europe and the UK :) It's funny how I live in the UK and haven't even really seen the place. That's something that's going to have to change. Are you going to travel the world by yourself then, or with others? I like the idea of going it alone, doing everything without making adjustments for others.

Your mention of islands actually gave me an idea and I was surprised to find many uninhabited islands around the uk! I bet that if someone decided to live there without telling the gov, no-one would know.

Not everyone wants to be a part of the traditional capitalist system, but I don't think the majority of people are truly aware of just how their lives are affected by it. I have come to that conclusion because whenever I try to explain it to someone, I get the feeling they think I'm some militant lunatic.

I hear that. People are so brainwashed they don't realize what's going on right in front of them. My friends definitely think I'm a lunatic

  • so instead of working on a "big boss" try becoming a "big boss" your self. You can try to make a company or something and run it whiling telling OTHER people what to do. tell if it it helped.

I agree. Being your own boss is the only working freedom we can have. I've worked for myself for the last 8 years. The best thing about it is that I have complete freedom with my time; the worst thing about it is that I'm responsible for everything.
Employees don't have to worry about company taxes, paying other employees, lawsuits, providing health insurance, raising capital, security, and a myriad of other things. I don't have to worry about being fired, glass ceilings or running out of vacation days. I would never go back to becoming an employee again. Build your own business with your labor, not someone elses. The exception is if you get lots of stock options in a fast rising, successful company - in this case you can become a multi-millionaire really quickly and never have to work again.

Poison is right grim, I have no interest in telling people what to do, id be a hypocrite and no one likes a hypocrite :]

And the majority of people dont realize what sad things their lives have become, its a joke really, the system seems to be designed to keep everyone in debt. But everyone just keeps following like sheep.

When i said do as we please, i mean do as we please to ourselves. When you are affecting other people it is a different story. As for your family business dilemma, heres a quote ive taken to heart lately and sums up how i feel quite nicely.

"In kindergarten, my teacher told me to write down what I wanted to be when I grew up.
      I wrote "happy".
My teacher said, "No no, you don't understand the assignment."
I said, "No, you don't understand life.""

Where's that quote from? Thanks for sharing that :)

That brought back memories of thinking about life when I was a little scrap in primary school and getting depressed over the everlasting boringness that was described in the adults' version of what would happen in the future, after school.

See, before all the talk of jobs and money, I knew that I would be FREE after stupid school of course and that I would go on adventures and do whatever the hell I wanted to do. Who in their right mind would think that school years are the best years of anyone's life?

Now, I can see why people may think that and that's just sad.

If you don't mind me asking, what are you doing in life right now, and what are you going to do with your feelings of "fuck this?" Just wondering because I'm feeling quite annoyed and disillusioned right now.

Nah, I think the author is sick of all that.

It's always easier and safer to do as you're told. Stick to the plan and you can see how your life will pan out till you're 80. Reassuring if seen one way, horrifying if seen in another.

Since almost everything is controlled by this system we have, it's hard to stop being a part of it, especially when you have people depending on you to bring in the dosh...
That's mostly why everyone does it. The obligation and responsibility to others.

I don't think we should simply "do as we please" (obvious murderous and other evil implications lol, I know what you mean though) but it is sad that we are bound in such a way that we don't even realise it at times. A while ago, I asked my parents what they wanted to do before and how they felt. They wanted to do this and that; really live and experience things; make a difference...you know, and why not? They forgot. Now, my dad's busy filling the new house that he's built with pretty looking toys and thousand pound rugs, but he's still not happy.

My family won't be happy if I decide to live life my own way and not take "my" part in the family business or become a high flying business person. They'll be pissed. But I really can't swallow my soul and do everything as I'm told. It sounds selfish, but I know that I can't. I have a problem with it too.
