Is it normal to not want to tan?

Every girl I know my age is tanned (or orange) and I don't want to conform. I have dark dyed red hair and I am one of the whitest people I have ever saw in my life and I'm bloody proud!
My boss used to laugh at me "You need some sun, nip" (I didn't know people still used the word "nip" until I met him) but I think it suits me and being orange doesn't work for me what so ever.
For how young I am I am very old-fashioned, I guess I just want to be an "English rose" and embrace my paleness instead of drowning it in the sun, normal?

PLUS when I catch the sun I just go lobster red then back white again...how attractive...

I admit I like the look of tanned skin, but i keep mine naturally pale. It looks good on me, and tanning looks fake. I, too, am a burn-then-white again person. Pale is sexy! Orange is porn star nasty. Natural tan skin is hot though.

I remember this knock-out beautiful girl in highschool. She was usually well tanned, and just a goddess. Today (this is 30 years later) I saw this girl again; skin is kinda leathery, and looks older than her age.

It is good to get your Vitamin-D from the sun. You only need to expose your skin to it for about 5 or 10 minutes a day. If you're a red-head you're probably way more sensitive to UV rays than others. Forget about the tan.

I'm naturally tan but I've always wondered what it would be like to be pale. My husband is pale and I think the pale porcelain skin is absolutely gorgeousss.

"(I didn't know people still used the word "nip" until I met him)" LOL That's so something you would read in a chick lit novel.

Spending too much time in the sun is very bad for your skin, it leads to wrinkles, & in some cases skin cancer, so yes, it is better to stay pale.

I feel you there girl. My dad is a blue eyed blond American and my mom is a Colombian brunette; they met on the beach in Panama when he was in the Army so I feel damned sometimes when it comes to the whole tanning thing! It certainly didn't help that when we were teenagers my sister was the typical tan blond girl who was so full of herself. I'm a natural brunette but I've been wearing my hair red since I was 15(I'm 43 now) and so I too prefer to keep my skin light and natural. I've never laid out in the sun deliberately to get a tan and I always wear sunblock whenever I can.

Well, I went to see an Opthamologist almost two years ago for a routine eye exam and he found sun damage in my left eye and advised me to NEVER go out in the sun without sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen. If the damage turns into cancer I would most likely lose my eye. I'm so happy that I was never a sun worshiper and I resent my family(especially my father and sister) for trying to convince me that I needed to get some color because I was too pale according to them. It's strange because in a sad way the sun damage I've suffered is oddly reaffirming that my mind and body always knew what was right for me despite popular culture and my own family trying to convince me otherwise. Natural is beautiful and there's nothing wrong with light skin as a matter of fact I prefer it with red or auburn hair. I guess I just shudder to think that I'm in danger of developing skin cancer in my eye and had I pursued other people's idea of beauty I might already have cancer.

Hang in there Girlfriend, you're beautiful just the way God made you, an English Rose. Another truly awesome thing I can say about staying out of the sun now that I'm 43 years old is that people tend to think I'm about ten years younger. My sister is three years younger than me and she has more wrinkles and fine lines. So when you're my age you'll probably look much younger and all those fake tanning bed girls will look like leather handbags! Haha.

The porcelin complection this is really pretty. Unfortunatly I don't tan evenly, but my skin won't stay pale either.

  • Don't conform!!! I'm proud to know there are other nonconformists out there! And honestly, there is nothing more attractive than a cream-skinned redhead. Hit me up. Haha.
