Is it normal to not want to sleep after a nightmare?
So I had this nightmare and I am horrified at the thought of sleeping again. I know that the dream wasn't real but I just don't want to go through it again.

sometimes if i go back to sleep i get sent back into the nightmare :( i'm with you
it wont last.i had recurring nightmares but they are all gone now. but whats great is the feeling when you wake up and it was only a dream. just sleep, and learn how to wake yourself up. thats what i did. just open your eyes. it sounds hard but it works. just open your eyes. seriously. you can. just open them.
after I read the book The Shining, I had a really scary nightmare. I woke up and was terrified to go back to sleep, so I went to the living room on the couch and watched The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire til it eventually lulled me to sleep.
Just do something that makes you comfortable, and possibly sleepy, and hopefully you'll have no choice but to just go to sleep. Think positive thoughts about things you like and make you happy :)
Its the same with me. You probably won't have one, though. Just relax before bed and read a funny book.
Thanks quaips, I think that is the best response to any question I have ever read. Well I think I will read a slow, calm book tonight.
I sympathize with you. I had dreadful nightmares as a child and was found on the top of the stairs sleepwalking. They disappeared after a while and I am sure yours will do the same.
In many ways, nightmares are a safety valve to rid our minds of unwanted fears and they are nothing to worry about as long as sleepwalking, if present, does not pose a risk.
You may find you dream if you eat certain foods before retiring or view certain horrors on TV.
Try reading something romantic or pleasant before going to bed. Maybe poetry will help or even certain children's books that have a happy ending. The important thing is to be calm and relaxed before going to sleep.
I remember as a child seeing what I called "Funny Darkness" before going to sleep and I knew I was heading for a nightmare so I had to call for the light to clear my head. I am only saying this to demonstrate how odd these things can be and they amount to nothing.
Maybe you should try a very dim light in the bedroom and perhaps have a Horlicks or Ovaltine drink last thing.
Hope this helps.
