Is it normal to not want to have friends/estrange oneself from friends

I'm in a situation where I no longer need my current group of friends and have chosen to dissociate myself from them altogether. My [friendless] mother would have me believe that this wasn't normal behavior. I would argue otherwise. The way I see it, friends are something that evoke joy in you. I do not need friends to be happy. What's your opinion on the matter?

Not normal but very common among IIN users. The results of your post will reflect this.

I do this too, but I want friends, desperately, I just haven't found anyone that I feel like talking to.. People would think I'm being picky or something, though it's pretty easy to make friends, finding people you actually like that much to go out with is another matter, lol... My mom has no friends either, or she does but I rarely if ever see her go out or anything.

As the great Jerry Sienfeld says

"I've come to the conclusion that there are certain friends in you life that they're just always your friends and you have to accept it. You see them, you don't really want to see them. You don't call them. They call you. You don't call back. They call again."
