Is it normal to not want to be smart?

I dont like bragging, i guess i could say im smart. In school, im statistically in the Top 10 of our batch. For me, anything below 90% is failing. And while being smart can be cool, sometimes i wish that i didnt have to work so hard to maintain my reputation, or not have to worry about honors, or not to be embarrassed by my mistakes.

I dont think grades define if someone is smart, real smart people keep it to themselves.

There's a big difference between being smart and having a good work ethic.

I'm smart, but lazy as hell. I don't get anything less than a 90% and I don't spend more than a couple hours a year studying. Which is not a good thing, since I just memorize everything the day of, and forget it the day after. I wish I had even a fraction of the work ethic as some people do, and was able to study things more thoroughly so that I retained the knowledge.

You should be happy with yourself, you are going to get far in life if you continue on this path :)

    • This was me...28 years ago. I scored 32 on the ACT, but graduated high school with a D average. I was there to party and have fun.

I'm among the best at what I do in the blue collar world. It came easy...but I'd probably make 5 times what I do if I would have put effort into high school and beyond.

I'm really tired of telling my kids "no...we can't go on vacation, we can't get that, you can't have that experience," all because I was a fuck off.

Trust me, you want to be smart. In general, stupid people have a rough time after school. And you know what, I fucking love it. Those cunts are all popular and high school is the best their lives get. They bully the smart people because they're insecure about their own idiocy. Once you hit 18, guess who's going into Higher Education, you. Guess who's working at the local fast food restaurant, the stupid kids. Out in the real world, away from the HS nonsense, employers value intelligence and work ethic, not who was the most popular at school. Never ever let anyone make you feel like being clever is shit. It's the best gift you've, by sheer chance, happened to receive.

    • Bullshit.

There are so many smart people that lead shitty lives, and so many dumb ones that went on to succeed.

Guy with an IQ of 89 went on to become a US president.

Guy with an IQ of 140 sitting in prison for fucking severed heads.

You live in the F.A.L or "fantasy adult land" which is where people often go not long after the HS. It is that of a pathetic "status delusion" and nothing more. A limbo of desks, routine, and mediocrity.

You may as well kill yourself, because your life has been lived a million times already.

No, it's not normal. People seem to respect you if they think you're smart. I met a guy where I used to work that had an IQ of 175 and he made sure you knew it. I'm no slouch, myself, but I don't think IQ is a complete measure of smartness.

Anyway, I was prepared to be impressed, but the guy really didn't seem so fantastically bright to me. Also, he was a complete jerk with a terrible personality and, I discovered later, a wife who more or less told me she didn't like him at all because of his crazy cockiness and weird habits. The Comptroller who hired him was later fired and mister smart guy just disappeared.

There are other aptitudes and abilities that are important too and some pay better. Also the old axiom applies: "Use it or lose it." There's plenty of evidence that you can increase your intelligence by simply using it.

I'm going to sound like I'm full of myself too, but I totally get what you're saying!! I live in a family full of unsuccessful well.. dummies. I'm the one who got good grades and made something of myself, but uhhggg sometimes I would love to be stupid to. With my family I have to make a lot of decisions for them because they're dummmbbb!!! I hate being the pinnacle of the family when I'm the youngest. It's screwed up man.
I don't drink much, but the one time I did it was amazing to just dumb down a little bit. I didn't think or worry for my family nearly as much that day. Ignorance was bliss. It really was.
It would be nice not have things expected of you, wouldn't it? Worst part about this is, my sisters a pot head and my dads always giving her money to help her out cause "she's broke and she needs it." Where as helping me through college didn't come to his mind because "I'm the smart one, I don't need help." I ranted. I'm sorry, I can just relate.

  • Sounds like you don't like working hard... No offense but if you were really smart you wouldn't need to study to keep top honors

Although I love art and appreciate my love for art, sometimes I wish I loved it less because I' not willing to pursue any other career unless it is art related and getting into an art career can be very difficult (the reason why speaks for itself). I think there is a good and bad to everything, but be happy with who you are and what you've been blessed with.

"In this life one can be oh so clever or one can be oh so nice. It is so much easier to be nice". From the play Harvey, about an invisible 6' tall white rabbit.
It doesn't sound to me like you are that much smarter than your peers to me. It just seems you work your ass off for what you want (good grades/awards) so much harder than others.

I don't like being smart, my Dad knows I'm smart and how easy school is for me and always expects straight A's... I think that's why I purposely do bad in school.. I don't really know why but sometimes I wish I wasn't so smart so that I could stop over analyzing things like religion, death, life, etc. I'll think about those things for hours and just sit by myself with a J and contemplate.

In direct answer to the question, I'm sure no one wants added pressure to maintain an image so sure, normal. However, I disagree with this "smart" goal. I don't think that people who are great at math, know 4 languages and remember a truckload of events hundreds of years ago are any different or better than those who don't. I also don't think those who aren't at the top of their class or even failing are stupid, it just means they aren't scoring high on a written test. Book smarts does not equal life smarts as knowing absolute value like the back of your hand doesn't ensure friends, conversation ability and a good life, its just extra IF you want it.

I know people who put unrealistic burdens on their mental health for striving for "perfection" in grades and it doesn't make for the most relaxed and stress-free person. I didn't do so well in high school and my college grades aren't ace, but passing. I AM however practicing percussion and piano quite seriously. I know that isn't one's precious algebra which is fine if you're into that but its certainly not any less of a hobby, or stupid.

I'm pretty smart, in the top 50 in the country at math for my age group, and I definitely identify with you; it would be nice to not have such a huge pressure put on my shoulders every time I slip up or have fear of doing so. You WANT to be smart mind you, but at the same time simply disregard such pressure. Ignore it. Easier said than done, but possible.
