Is it normal to not understand the concept of being bored?

I want to start off by saying that this excludes people from poorer countries who really do have nothing. Being from Canada it's impossible for me to relate to a situation such as that. But now back on topic, I don't understand how someone could say they're bored. There are people who have to be entertained every minute of every day or they get bored. It's ridiculous. I don't understand how someone with a computer can go on facebook and complain how bored they are. Read a book, get a job. Learn to yodel for fucks sake. They obviously have access to a computer so the things they could learn to do are endless.
We live a free world where you can go out and do anything so I don't understand how someone can have the nerve to say they're bored. Unless you're locked up somewhere than is there any excuse for being bored? I think boredom is just laziness. Being bored isn't about having nothing to do, it's about being too lazy to find something to do and coming up with boredom as an excuse. I just don't understand how someone can't entertain themselves for five minutes. Is it possible to have so little imagination or intrigue.

From the way you just described it, it seems as if you understand it perfectly. If one has a computer and internet, one has an unlimited amount of resources available to them.

One can download free, high quality video games, read news articles and investigate them, do research and read medical and science journals... I used to do that when I was idle and had everyone at school thinking I was some fucking genius.

Hell, when I was a kid, if I complained of boredom, my parents would have given me some cleaning supplies and told me that the kitchen needs to be cleaned. Even living in the middle of nowhere, in the country, there was always something to do. Explore the woods, research the wildlife, take up yoga and meditation, good lord do I wish I had the spare time to say that I was bored!

    • Thank you. This is exactly what I'm trying to say. I think you may have conveyed the idea a little better than me actually. My problem has always been not having enough time. I can't imagine what it would be like having too much time.

I can't imagine what it would be like having too much time and being unable to appreciate all of the education resources that the internet and the "outside world" has to offer. I seriously can't imagine how someone can live their lives in that state of "boredom". Knowledge is everywhere.

    • It bothers me because I don't understand how someone living in a developed country with plenty of resources and endless things to do could complain of boredom. I'd almost go as far as saying that it's completely pathetic. It's like being given a box of food and complaining of hunger because you're too lazy to open the box.

This is a perfect description of it, actually. I'd like to quote this and put this on my facebook under the header "anonymous", if you don't mind (I do this sometimes on this site XD).

I live in a poor country and the only time I'm bored is when I'm at work. Day long I'm behind a screen.

    • I was more referring to being bored in your spare time. Most people get bored at work but that's not because they're too lazy to do anything, it's because they're stuck there for hours with very little choice in what they're doing.
