Is it normal to not understand being 'disturbed'?

I hear it all the time...warning, the footage/contents/story is disturbing! People saying they are disturbed by violence, or whatever else.

I just don't get it!! Are they being serious?? Is this all fake, people just 'saying' they're disturbed, just like they 'say' they like your outfit? I have NO grasp on the reality of being disturbed. So far, nothing has ever disturbed me and it's not like I don't 'try' to get disturbed, I look at and deal with supposedly disturbing things all the time. Blood, gore, crime, violence, murder, bugs, snakes, rotten food, maggots, filth, whatever, nothing disturbs me.

is it normal to never be disturbed and not know the feeling? That's not the only feeling I don't know, but it's one that's constantly in my face so that's why I ask.

I think it's an empathy thing. The older you get, the more this stuff bothers you because you care that it could hurt someone.

To be disturbed by something, you have to care enough. Perhaps you just don't care enough yet. Give it time. You will know how it feels. :)

I'd agree with this. As time goes on I'm getting more compassionate.

Good for you, other people get traumatized by that. Don't judge them because they're not looking out just for you, asshole. Honestly, you have know idea what it is like to be traumatized by something like this, so you don't understand that OTHERS are. Quite self-centered, I must say.

I say something 'disturbs' me a lot. I just feel a sick feeling in my stomach and throat. The image burns in my mind and I get so confused that a person can do something so disgusting. (When I see movies, my mind tends towards true stories) I can't really understand those people and the thing that disturbs me are the people who aren't reacting the way I do.
It makes me feel like ANYONE could possibly do something so evil/disgusting.

It's not just violence that gets me - it's really the excessivness of it in film nowadays.

Sounds like you're numb. You just don't feel the sensitivity. You sound young...I know when you grow up not feeling or being numb it can be because of an early trauma. Whether it be sexual, physical, mental, medical...when you have trauma your body and mind numbs itself to protect u. And if you dont know how to deal with bad things or trauma, you maintain the numbness.

Idk if this is u, but its something that jumped out to me when i read ur Q.

You can either have empathy or develop it so instead of thinking why you don't find this disturbing maybe try connecting with the situation

I'm kind of torn because I hate violence but at the same time, people are so militant that I find it difficult to feel too much empathy. I almost half feel like people want drama and violence in the world, like they need it to thrive. I mean people love soldiers because they kill people, not because they save lives.

i think some things are disturbing but that just means its more important for you to know about them especially if its a real life thing because if its disturbing that means its important and something you should be aware of

It is not entirely normal but I know people who are that way by virtue of their mentality. To them, the things that you have described are just a part of life.

I wish I could share the mentality. I know I talk about this too much on this site, but I once saw the body of a woman who jumped off of a bridge and was ran over minutes before my arrival and I was deeply disturbed. It hurt to see a human being who could have been my sister, my mother, my best friend, reduced to biological waste for some team of examiners and flesh handlers to pick up.

I have a friend who works for them medical examiner's office and to him, it is just biological waste but when I look at those bodies on the internet or on the news, on the road or in real life, I see people and pain. When I look at people on the news blowing each other up, I see people and pain. When I hear about a murder, I hear about a person who suffered and that pain is very real to me.

I wish I could be more like you. Not giving a shit is so much easier, at least I would imagine.
