Is it normal to not tip when you order food to go?

I always tip at restruants when I eat out, however at some restruants when I use my debit card and order to go and do not eat in the restruant, it has a spot for the tip. I always leave it blank because I'm not eating there, but I always wonder if Im expected to tip still. I go to the same restruants frequently and don't want them spitting in my food or anything for not tipping, so I want to know if not tipping food to go is expected.

I'm generally a big tipper, as long as the service is good AND I'm actually eating in the restaurant.

I do not tip when picking up a to-go order. Sure, it would be an extremely nice gesture, but in my opinion, I don't think it's expected, nor do I think it's necessary.

So much easier in a country where we pay a fair wage and don't have to worry about these things :)

I used to get takeaway from a Chinese restaurant and the price was based on the weight of the food. I usually wouldn't have much money left so, it would've been pointless for me to them. I feel like the money I gave them should've even replaced The need for a tip.

I don't tip either. You're picking it up. Think of it like ordering pizza. You tip them if they drop it off but not when you pick it up. Like he said ^ the chef isn't getting the money.

They probably use the same reciept machine for all credit/ debit sales, regardless whether it's dine-in or take out. So, that line would be present, even though you where not waited on. I'm a generous tipper, but i wouldn't tip if no additional services were provided. It's not like the cook, the only one actually deserving in this situation, is going to get the tip. save your money

I usually tip a small amount if I'm picking it up. They still have to make sure the order is correct, add in any condiments / napkins / utensils, that sort of thing, but it is a lot less effort than serving someone at a table. My usual rule is 20% for eating in, and 10% for carrying out.

I'm a pretty generous tipper, though, on account of having been a waitress for a couple of years. Do whatever you see fit, but keep in mind your average server gets something like $3 an hour + tips.

I rarely tip. it all depends on the person serving you and how good the food is.
