Is it normal to not think this is stealing?

My mum had an expensive Clarins eye cream, these cost upwards of fifty pounds. I was using the bathroom in her room and I saw she'd thrown it in the wastepaper basket. I picked it up and pulled off the lid (it had a pump dispenser which didn't unscrew but had to be yanked off) and I saw there was still a significant amount of product beneath the pump and around the inside neck of the bottle. I rescued it from the bin, put it in my room and started using it. My mum saw it in my room and went mental saying I'd stolen something valuable etc...but she'd thrown it away! is it normal I don't agree that this is stealing? Just to clarify, it was deliberately discarded, it hadn't fallen there by accident.

  • If she threw it away, it is not stealing. It is much like that saying "one man's junk is another man's treasure" (Please don't take that in a sexual manner).

If her bin is just above the area she kept it, then you didn't steal it, but you did take it when she wasn't done with it. Perhaps it droped in there?

It didn't drop in there, she said she'd thrown it away but that I should have told her there was still product in it. I see her point but accusing me of stealing is going a little far, and really, why should I? As she'd thrown it out anyway!

    She threw it away.

If she's pissy about it then maybe she shouldn't waste it like that. Especially if it's that expensive.

yeah, that. If it's so valuable and she doesn't double-check, why shouldn't you benefit. from that.

Totally not stealing in my eyes, it was more of an efficient rescue operation from garbage.

If she had thrown it away, yeah, totally not stealing. Maybe she set you up as an excuse to be angry at you, or accidentally dropped it in?

Oh, didn't read all the way. So it wasn't an accident. So perhaps it was a set up..!

If she threw it away, then no, it's not stealing. She relinquished ownership.
