Is it normal to not like being american

Well I really don't like being an American. I can't really relate to a lot of the culture here.

People are so into sports and national pride.I'm not.I mean I'm happy I don't live in a third world country and I like a lot of the ideas this country was originaly founded on.But I don't really want to start buying American flags for my front lawn.

People here seem obsessed with what people do in their own lives even if it doens't effect them. They worry over whether or not they doing drugs, having sex,or what religion they follow.I...don't.

I don't like how my country spends millions of tax dolalrs on war machines but thinks funding schools and universal health care is bad.Not to mention all of our two parties have been bought out by corperations.I honestly don't care if I'd have to pay more taxes as long as I didn't have these outrageous college fees.

So is it normal to dislike my country? Could I maybe pass myself off as Canadian if I move soemwhere else?

Im not sure if anyone has said this yet, but.... Technically no one can truly be American. Everyone in the world has come from really one place only, if you look far back enough.

I understand your distaste for the behaviors of both government and people in the U.S. I hate being put into a box, I hate blanket statements, I hate ignorance, and I hate closed minds. But I'm pretty sure that happens everywhere. Too many people allow themselves to remain in the dark. We are distracted by the shiny and it allows the govt to take advantage. If you want change, demand it.

What really makes me angry is when people bitch and moan about the issues and do nothing to change things. I know how hopeless it can feel to effect change but there are many Americans who give blood, sweat, and tears to issues they feel passionate about. We may not always agree but we have the freedom to disagree and that can be beautiful.

People all around the world are realizing the power they hold as a group and demanding change. Governments are crumbling and the world is changing before our eyes. As an American I feel guilty for the bad parts of our culture that have spread outwards. But the grassroots spirit that shaped our country will work, and is working in other parts of the world.

There are Americans who don't wave the flag, who fight the government, give charity, don't preach their beliefs onto others, help their neighbors simply because they are neighbors, and are all around good people who just want to be free to live and allow others to do the same. These are the people I choose to surround myself with and the life I want others to realize for themselves. So I do what I can to prevent hatred and ignorance from spreading but it's a tough job and I could use a little help.

Difficult times for you people at the moment. In terms of the age of nations, you're just coming out of adolescence. The world is critical of you and treats you as if you're stupid, when all you want is to be noticed and loved and thought to be an adult.

I actually like this self-doubt from Americans. The phase of any nation where they think "Nothing we can do can possibly be wrong because we're English/Roman/Chinese" is obviously delusion.

I'm not saying we should hate our nationality, just that we should take a balanced view of it, and of what other people think of it.

It sounds like you are questioning things. And that, more than anything else, is good no matter what country you come from.

You may need to travel the USA a bit more. I think your post is pigeonholing everyone under one slant. Truth is, there's quite a diverse culture in the US. The regionalism is bigger than you think. Americans aren't entirely uniform under one nationalistic thought process. Granted, education aims to homogenize everyone towards one belief system and national pride, but there's still plenty of cultural uniqueness here, that doesn't get projected by the general media. There's a ton of PERKS to being am American. The US is #1 on innovation (Research & Development). The US is quite a culture exporter, too.

Sports are loved the world over, in every location. Its a human thing. People do sports.

Diversity? Have you seen all these world fusion restaurants? Cities here have their fair share of international hodge podge. You have to look for it, if its not in your neighborhood.

The USA is in fact a melting pot culture of immigrants.

There's good and bad everywhere. Gov't has always been bonkers. I think that's why the founding fathers wrote the original plans to seek less gov't. Well, oh, well!?!? The military may seem bad, but its got many economic perks.

Canadian? LOL! Marry a Canadian? You get dual citizenship.

I feel exactly the same!! since that douche bag w fenagled his slimy ass in there, it was downhill. Id like to get political asylum from some other country and abandon my roots, and give it back to the native americans, as it would seem to be the 'right' thing to do. .. that will never happen, but even if it did, they'd still be cheated bcuz of the countless ways we've polluted, caused disease, and destroyed precious resources, exploited animals (e.g. caged chickens, cows injected withunnatural hormones) for greed. usa is like the 1000 lb gorilla. it does anything it wants bcuz there is no,one to atop it. it's disgusting!!!

I dislike when people don't see the rooting cause of how our nation got this way. I wouldn't ever think of showing off the fact that I come from an ignorant country that takes care of the rich. I wish I were born in a less ignorant country. Sadly, there aren't many of those around anymore.

But this is a nice country. The landscape is incredible. Anyone here ever travel? Hello? The great outdoors. OMG, its beautiful here. Anyone? Yosemite? The Blue ridge Mt's? Park City, Utah? Aspen? Grand Teton Nat'l Park?

yobbish? .....looking that term up? Aha, like dreadful hooligans, I guess. Aha, wait, I looked it up. Oh dear. That is not how the English get portrayed to Americans. Americans automatically think English = posh. Its the whole theater and movie influence. American films seem to think that British = villain or James Bond. That's if you ask a random person. Its hot, of course.

Sadly true, unless you're in a cosmopolitan place that is frequented by people that travel a bit. I'm American. I meet locals. Plenty of them are so stupid, I want to know how on earth they made it through school.

Be a good person, stick up for your beliefs, and enjoy your life. "being" a particular nationality is an important part of your heritage but doesn't need to control your life. That being said, it's not a bad thing to
Love and honor your citizenry and national identity, but work with it in a way that you deem acceptable and understand that others will also do the same.
