Is it normal to not know whether i am in love?

I have been seeing my gf for just over a year. I definitely care deeply for her and I would be devastated if we broke up, but I don't know if I am in love or not. I have never been in love and I do not know what it feels like. Do I love her, or are we just in a good relationship/friendship?

Not necessarily. It can be just attachment, the one you can even have for a pet.

I think that love can also be when you can leave a person if you know that that will make them happier.

Every time you see her does it feel like the weight of the world is on your chest, and when you are apart do you feel empty inside? Do you feel less complete when you two are apart and a feeling of joy overcomes you when you see her. Do silly little love songs go through your head when you think of her and you can't help smiling when she's around?
I'm sure it's different for each of us, but that's how feeling love seems to me.

    • I recently learned from a post I made from one of dom180's comments that there are different styles of love and people have inconstant diffenations for it.
I've always been confused by the concept and feel similar to how OP describes to where love to me means I care about someone and get along with them well.
What you are describing seems fits what most people feel which I've always had a hard time understanding why anyone would want to feel like that.

    That's what love is.

No relationship is going to go on for months and years where it's fireworks every time you see them. If that feeling is how you define love, then you will be gravely disappointed in life.

I think there is a strong chance you are in love. Sometimes it takes loss to clarify these things, but here's hoping you never lose her.

There are different ways to love someone, as long as yours makes you both happy, don't worry about it.

As for my own interpretation of in love, for me it's about the unspoken balance that just happens when we are with each other. If we need to cry or laugh or yell, we just automatically do it- regardless of what we thought we might do in a given situation- and it always turns out to be exactly what we needed. I can't do that with anybody else in the world.
