Is it normal to not know what to do when asked to to something?

I don't know what to do when someone asks me to do something for them when they can easily do it themselves. For example, say I'm sitting on the couch with a friend and they ask me to get them a soda. Would it be polite to comply, or would it be passive? It seems like a stereotypically bossy thing to ask someone, but is it really? I don't socialize enough, so sometimes these situations confuse me.

  • If you are the host, then you should be providing beverages to your guests, without them having to ask first. That would be the polite thing to do.

If it's a friend that spends several days a week at your house and you've been friends for a long time, then tell them they can help themselves.

If you're already up getting something it makes sense that you are able to get the thing that they ask for or like the other person said if you are hosting them.. you should ask anyways...
