I am absolutely no pro at this, but I think its good to ask questions about the person so you know them better, and really once you know them better you can talk about things that might interest them, or better yet, the both of you. There's no science to it though. When I find there's nothing to talk about I just ask the person what they've been up to lately, from there, depending on what they say, you can conversations about a few of those things.

There's more, hopefully some other people speak up.

Some people believe that the only purpose of reading the news is to have something to discuss about with people you barely know.

Maybe it could help starting your engine.

Again another preteen post. Practise in the mirror and touch yourself at the same time. That way whenever you have a conversation in public you wont feel good without touching yourself so then youll touch yourself in public so then everyone will see so then it will be funny for us on the internetz LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

Both the folk above offer good advice. Once you are comfortable with who you are all these things come natural and you don't ever think about it. A key I've learnt about public speaking is to know your subject. One of my sayings to my kids and people I teach is 'a fool talks a lot about something know nothing about'. I certainly can relate to you up to when I was about 25yrs. Anyway, if nothing works start humming. Good luck.
