Is it normal to not know how to drive?

I guess I really know its not normal but I am a 28 year old who does not know how to drive. I really can not understand why so many people know how to do it so well. I think I would wreck into everything if I were to drive. I have tried several times on open roads but never stop and go traffic. I get confused with the brake and gas. I am actually a fairly intelligent person but I just can not seem to get this down. Is it just my self esteem or are there other people out there that cant drive. I would love to hear your stories.

I'm in my 30's and perfectly content to never operate a car. I've been in numerous accidents as a kid, my ex tried to teach me and screamed and yelled at me when i would make mistakes. it makes me so nervous i have no desire at this point.
we should start a club LOL
i have felt alone because of this also

  • i don't get it either. they make it sound so easy but it's not. i can be driving, then suddenly i'll be like shit is the left hand side the brake or the right hand side. now that's bloody dangerous. it's just so...confusing. and for the record, i believe i'm quite smart so stupidity is a nono here...really really want to drive though. ppl make fun of me and that's not cool. at all

Good on you! I'm never going to drive a car. there are just to many of them. i plan to get really fit and ride a bike everywhere I go. I mean, sure ill do the old car pool and public transport when I need to get to far places, but that wont happen very often. Anyway, I got a bit carried away there. Don't get too worried about not knowing how to drive. It's not the most important thing in the world. I'm sure you'll learn how to soon!!!

I do have a liscence but I still suck at it so you are definatly not alone. A lot of drivers are actually terrible at it. You could easily learn. The standards for getting a liscence are pretty low- so low that even illeterate, illegal immigrants can get one.

If you practice a lot, maybe you will get a lot better. Driving a car is mostly motor memory, anyway--if you learned how to ride a bike, you might be able to learn how to drive a car!

take a driving class for starters. if you live in a big city and don't need a car, and expect to spend your whole life in one place, then you can go without. confidence is a factor, and the classes will fix that. not being able to drive and have a car can make your life very controlled. go for it, and enjoy your independence.

I was the same way. I was too scared to try to drive. I think you have to WANT to drive. To have the independence and not need to depend on someone else to take you somewhere. The day I finally felt confident and actually wanted to try learning was in a wal mart parking lot. You can not go fast but the having to slow down or stop for other cars and people is practice.

I would use the excuse of not being able to trust other drivers. But its life you have to trust people you don't know for many things. Such as neighbours in an apartment complex have to trust the other to not be careless and start a fire. Vice versa and etc.

So go for it you don't know what your missing.
