Is it normal to not have many friends in high school?

I am a senior in high school and I've been depressed lately because looking back, I realize that I don't have very many friends. I have like 5 close friends and that's it. I think I have a hard time making friends because I get anxious when talking to new people (especially girls). I also have low self esteem and I have been seeing a therapist. I feel like a am fun to be around with my close friends. It makes me sad that I can't make friends. I am afraid that I will always be like this for the rest of my life. Any thoughts?

5 close friends is good. It's better to have a few good friends than 100 fake friends.

Don't worry, you are better off without them.

It's ok to only have a few close friends. If you want to have more friends now just be outgoing and start talking to new people. Don't be so afraid of what people will think about you, you won't know what they tink unless you talk to them.

Trust me, it's going to change. I had quite a few friends in high school and as soon as I went to college, it all changed and I figured out that they were jerks the whole time. You'll get way better friends in college.
And don't worry about how many friends you have. Most people are considered lucky if they can count five or more people to be their honest and good friend. Plus it's about quality not quantity.

  • I thought around 5 close friends was the norm? Anywho, I don't have low self esteem but I know I won't make any new friends (I hate talking to new people) and I'm okay with that. I guess your only options are to accept what is or change.
