Is it normal to not have a job while in college?

I'm in my second year of college and will be acquiring my associates by the end of the summer semester. I haven't had a job since graduating high school and am living with my parents over the break. While I am taking two tough courses during the break, I do not have a job and this leaves me feeling very down when I analyse where I am in life. Also, I'm still quite unsure as to what I want to do career wise. Is it normal to be in this position at 20?

  • Cut yourself some slack. School is work and should be taken just as seriously as a job. If you are trying to build your resume (CV) with experience, you may want to try volunteering in something related to what you are pursuing in school. Volunteer work is usually part-time and a great way to network with a variety of other people, even other professionals.

Its not a rule written in stone to have a job when you're in college/uni, some people can do both work and study and some like myself can't so I'm just studying haven't even ever had a job and I'm 21 and live with my parents. The stuff that I have to study is overwhelming I would not be able to do half of it if I.had a job. Since you have 2 tough classes I suggest you focus on those and not worry about having a job it doesn't make you a loser or anything it just makes you someone who knows what works and what doesn't work.

Yes this is what people do to pay for fees they are so high it's like they don't want you to go college.

Thanks for the responses, I guess I was overreacting quite a bit. Reading everything you all said really put things into perspective and I'm currently working on getting in some volunteer hours. Thanks for helping :)
