Is it normal to not celebrate valentine's day?

My boyfriend and I have been together for over 4 years & we have never celebrated Valentine's Day. I just feel that it's fake. I would rather him surprise me any other time of year by giving me a gift or taking me out to dinner because he wants me to feel special and appreciated, not because every commercial on tv is pressuring him to. He agrees with me, but our friends & family always tell us that it's weird/not normal and that we are being superficial.

Yes, it's a personal choice 64
Yes, I don't celebrate either 21
No, I always celebrate 6
No, it's just a holiday 8
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Why use one day to show your love? I don't do anniversaries either.

I suppose you could use Valentine's Day as an excuse to do something special but still do the spontaneous things the rest of the year too. Or you could just not celebrate. That's certainly not superficial and at least you are making a decision rather than being sheep.

I don't know if I'm celebrating Valentine's Day or not because my girlfriend is from a non-English speaking country and I don't think they have it. I've no idea which way to go. I'll need to find a way of bringing it up, I think. I don't mind either way. Like you, I would rather do things because I want to, rather than because the calendar and adverts tell me to.

Our anniversary is Feb. 16th, so we have to celebrate it, but I agree, it goes back to a pagan Roman holiday anyway.

I think its normal. I don't celebrate it because I'm single, but if I was with someone I wouldn't mind celebrating it. Its all personal preference.

I thoroughly believe that Valentines Day is a marketing conspiracy for the candy companies and the greeting card companies to boost their sales. It is also a way for fancy restaurants to maximize on coupon deals for those who might otherwise not frequent and various lingerie companies to purport the sexual affects of their lingerie being somehow special if they are bought for Valentines Day.

In short, it's a load of marketing garbage. But the day AFTER Valentines day, I shall be looking forward to the sale of those sweet, sweet Valentines day goodies. Yeah, the day after Halloween is awesome for candy sales, but nothing like the quality of stuff for the day after Valentines day!

I'm not one for celebrating a lot of things, and v-day is the worst of all of them. I despise that day and refuse to do anything for it.

You get old YOU'RE being superficial? Er... Valentine's Day IS quite superficial! So surely by not celebrating it... see what I mean? I don't either, it's a load of commericalised rubbish.

I don't understand why it's the one day you treat your partner extra nicely with gifts & stuff. You should treat your partner like that every day anyway. I don't celebrate it.

  • I've never celebrated it.

Except for in Elementary school, but I just liked Art class and crafty stuff, or any holiday that meant I might get some candy.

Normal. Valentines (or as they say around here valintimes) day was made up by greeting card companies to make money.
