Is it normal to not care what anyone thinks of your fandom?

I'm tired of all the hate I get for being a ____. Well, actually I haven't personally gotten any death-threats or anything like that, but it bothers me when other people do. I just wish my fandom could be left alone and cleared from the stereotype that they brought upon ourselves. But I know it will never completely go away, and "haters will hate". I'm just SO sick of _____ being bashed that I've decided not to care anymore.

I'm not saying what fandom I'm a part of, since this can be relevant to any. Why do we have these stupid stereotypes in the first place?

    In the interest of fairness, I am inclined to point out that if your "fandom" is Nazism, people might be right to judge.
    Also the only thing I've ever heard being referred to as a "fandom" is the one with the anthropomorphic animals.

      I always thought it was a general term. I'm a part of many of them, but none of them are hate groups.

    I had to look up what fandom meant because to me it means following a sports team. Even with that analogy though, I'm a Liverpool fan and if I got caught up with a bunch of Manchester United fans, it wouldn't be an unknown occurrence for them to slash a deep wound in my back and then defecate into it. It's known locally as "browning".

    Like you say, people will hate. It's just tribalism.

      I just want to know, is "browning" an actual thing that happens? Because that is just...utterly disgusting.

      And I suppose it IS tribalism. Maybe humans will just never get rid of their cave-manny ways.

    I'm a very sensitive person, so I always have trouble coping with people who hate my fandoms. I used to be extremely obsessed with this one particular show and I wound up forcing myself to stop liking it because I couldn't take the haters. Now I realize how stupid it was for me to quit liking something just because other people hate it. I really miss it but rewatching the episodes just isn't the same as when I first discovered it. :(

    Sports fans and gaming fans seem to be the most segregated and aggressive of these fandoms. I hate it so much. I have my preference in things, but I still enjoy the others as well. Why can't other people enjoy them all as well instead of being close-minded pricks about it?
