Is it normal to not call someone by their name?

My sister-in-law changed her first name to one she thought was more suited to her before I met and was introduced to her. Friends and family still call her by her original name. The name she chose is long winded. I for the longest time did not call her by name to avoid the decision on what to call her. At first I did not know her well enough use her original name and felt awkward saying the new one when no one else used it. I still try to avoid refering to her by name cause I'm confused over which one to use. I've known her now for 8 years. IIN?

I'd say it is pretty normal. Can't say I have any advice for you though cuz I do this with a lot of people. What should I call my mother-in-law? My step-father's parents? Certain co-workers? My kid's daycare provider? I assume it is my reserved nature that creates this uncertainty...I'm sure most people just come out and voice the confusion right away so it never has the chance to get awkward.

I never address people by their name. I usually just approach them and start talking to them, unless I HAVE to say their name.
Especially with teachers. I never know Ms. or Mrs.

It's very normal to feel the way you do. Co front her and ask her what you want her to call her.
