Is it normal to not be able to say hell or is this rule stupid?

When I was a kid we had to say heck not hell. Unless of course we were in church. If we said Hell we were punished because hell was a very bad word. In fact cussing was considered the worst offence. Even surpassed physical abuse. Now I am not saying we should teach children to say "Cock, fuck, wank" but anyone else find this rule kind of stupid to teach children?

    My grandmother, when she was young, got into trouble for saying words such as "dang" and "darn."

      My grandmother loves to tell (ad nauseum) the story of some song not being able to be played on the radio because it contained the line "Stick it in your family al-bum" and saying "bum" is reprehensible.

      She's not proud of my flagrant use of expletives :(

      But fuck that, I'm not letting that old cunt tell me what to do :D

    I don't know, I think it wouldn't be nice to let kids curse because then you'd probably have to explain what words like fuck, wank and cunt mean, and people usually don't want their kids to learn about sex at an early age, especially in such vulgar terms.
