Is it normal to not be able to eat in front of people?

Over the past few years I've been finding it hard to get myself to eat in front of people. If I am with a group of people, I usually can't get myself to eat anything, no matter how hungry I am.
There are a couple exceptions:
-Family I live with
-Very close friends
But even with my closest friends that know almost everything about me, I can't get myself to eat enough or until I am full. Even when visiting relatives that I see regularly it is hard for me to get myself to have dinner with them. I try not to go out with groups to lunch or dinner because I know I will probably just end up sitting there and not eating a single thing. I don't know if I have a problem or what.

    • I don't know if I'm overweight.
I'm 5'4 and weigh 110 if that matters.
I guess I feel kinda like a pig..

I can eat in front of people if they're all eating too. But I simply cannot eat in front of people when I'm the only one eating. It's just creepy knowing everyone is watching you stuff your face! LOL

    • Haha it's hard for me, even when everyone is literally stuffing their face. A couple weeks ago I went to a restaurant with some friends and they got all you can eat wings, and they put them in the middle of the table. Everyone was stuffing their faces, then they noticed I had gone through 2 ice waters but didn't touch any food. I just couldn't do it. In the end I had two pieces of celery and four ice waters total. And I was really hungry the whole time, because I hadn't eaten anything since around lunch the day before... I gotta get over this haha

I had this problem in school, I could not eat in public. But now I have got over it, I just walk around uni smashing sandwiches and crisps like a monster.

I guess it's normal. But I've never had that phobia truthfully. I did have a paranoia of people not liking me though when I was younger, just because I did get picked on in school.

You just need to overcome it and realise that nobody really cares about you eating, whether it's how you are eating or whatever.

I have this. I hate to eat in front of people. It makes me very uncomfortable, especially when People watch my every move. I don't like to eat in front of anyone. Solitude is best for food.

I have the exact same problem! Don't worry, you aren't alone.

It's a social phobia and it's not uncommon. If it's causing you a significant problem, it could be resolved with drugs, or therapy, or hypnosis, or CBT, or just by pushing yourself to do something you don't want to do, until it becomes easier and easier to do it.

      This.

I used to have the same problem. Then I started smoking weed and realized that most people are too into their own lives and heads to pay attention to whatever I am doing and the ones that are paying attention don't have interesting enough lives outside of the stupid idiots like me that they see in public.

      What an explanation!

Time to be honest, I guess. I also had this problem. It's nothing to be ashamed of. There are a few people in this post who have admitted it. Me too now. I did get past it, though. I hope the OP does too.

        • Thanks, I hope so too. I just hope it's nothing more than just a social phobia. Eating disorders are in my family and in health class I heard they can be genetic. I do eat though.

      • I've smoked weed for 4 years now and I still don't see it. People always are asking "Don't you got the muchies?!" hahaha but I dunno, social phobia I guess!

You wouldn't be the first, I know people who have smoked weed and it didn't do anything for them. Guess you can say brain differences really DO affect one's experience with substances.
