Is it normal to not be able to afford kitchen towels?

Sometimes my family yells at me if I accidentally spill something, they tell me to wipe up the gravy off the floor with a hankerchief, we can't afford kitchen towels as my mother's cigarettes which damage your health are apparently more important that basic kitchen utensils.

Almost sounds like the people on my block. They have no idea how to prioritize. They see buying a new car, drugs, jewelry, and animals (that they don't train but leave outside all day and night) more important than paying their rent, car insurance, or any other bills.

You can afford the internet but not kitchen towels?

I think in this case the lack of money is a lie and an excuse.

That said, you could just use toilet paper?

What about tissues or paper towels? A old and torn piece of cloth?
