Is it normal to need to take a valium pill before public speaking

my job calls for a lot of public speaking... on a weekly basis. the thing is when i take a valium before i speak in public i really nail it and everyone including me really enjoy the lecture. i know about addiction and that is what worries me.... i dont want to use this as a crutch like i am already doing. much less do i want to b a pill head for the rest of my life. the thing is that it doesnt affect my life or my family, it just helps me through my day. what do you think america, am i a hopeless case or is this justified?

I don't take valium but take xanax and it helps, otherwise I'll be shaking and people will notice my nervousness (and my mental issues). You are justified.

The internet isn't just for Americans, you know. :) But back to the point, I have to speak publicly too and have often thought about using valium or librium to steady the nerves. I take a liberal attitude and think it would be akin to taking anti-histamines for hay fever or hypnotics for insomnia, except for one thing. And that one thing is the reason I never have. Valium becomes less effective over time. It also has withdrawal symptoms. What will you do when not only does your crutch no longer work, but you feel much worse than you did before you first took it? You've already shown that you're willing to use a crutch so you'll use a stronger one when valium fails you. That's the reason I never took it in the first place.
