Is it normal to my parents took my graduation money?

We don't have much money, we never have. But none of my friends had to give their parents their graduation money. I wanted to get clothes that weren't from Goodwill and not feel like a freak for once. I want to just get over it, but now my mom is going on an expensive vacation and it just bugs me.

You obviously allowed them to take it, and no, thats not normal. For most parents anyways... I pretty much had to take care of my two brothers and step mom for about a year while my piece-of-shit dad sat on his ass, so don't feel too bad. My graduation money i made sure my parents had no inkling of.

  • I never got any money for graduating from high school. I guess my government doesn't pay people to finish high school. It would be nice if they did though.

If that money was yours and in your personal bank account, then how did your parents steal it from you?

I always had a job while I was in high school and my pay-cheques would get deposited into my account as soon as I received them. I saved for years while I was going to school and eventually, when I graduated, I had enough to move far far away from my family and go to college.

It wasn't from the government, and I don't have a bank account. I have a job, it pays in cash. My parents took that, too.

but dont you think they deserve it .may be they dont take it as someone else's money as its their own child's money who they brought up to be educated , bought him all necessary requirements -> food, clothes, toys etc.....
and the most important cherished with love.....!!!
forget it man think that you gifted it..... you can give them only such things and they gave you something through which you can earn for your whole life...!! STAY HAPPY...!!! :)

I'm trying to be okay with it. I know we needed it, I just wanted to feel normal for once.

      • Oh, I thought you meant the government because you made it sound as if there was a lump sum of money owed to your upon your graduation.

You need your own bank account. If your old enough for a job, your old enough to open a bank account. Seriously, get one, now.

Maybe your parents needed your money to pay for your food and such? Children are not exactly cheap to raise and keep.

By the way: I meant I had a jobs where an employer pays me an actual pay-cheque, not odd jobs for cash payment like mowing lawns, teaching piano lessons or babysitting (all of which I've done, but I don't consider them *real* jobs).

I don't think the money came from the government.

Yeah that sucks. At least you had some money to be taken away tough.

Errrr.... I can't help but think that you were dumb to even give them the cash. I know quite a number of people whose parents were REALLY poor, but even there the parents preferred to skimp out on their own luxuries, rather than take their children's money.

It is however normal to give part of what you earn through work (after graduating highschool) to your parents, should you still live with them, but in no way is it normal for parents to confiscate gifted money or manage your funds at your age (I suppose that you are roughly 18)

OFC. Here in Germany it is also quite illegal to just take away your childrn's money, for any purpose other than to save it in a bank account and manage spending.

They said they needed the money. I couldn't just say no to them, I've never been able to. I've never really had money, so they usually just take a few dollars here and there, this is the first time I've actually had a decent amount. And I am 18.

If it were being used to pay bills, etc., then it would be more than understandable. However, if she's using that money for a vacation then that's completely out of line.

And sorry for the really stupid question, but where is it that the graduation money comes from in the first place?:S
