Is it normal to mourn over a stranger's death?

Is it normal to mourn over the suicide/death of a teenager I never knew, who lived in another country? Their death was in 2012, and I just read into their whole life and unfortunate struggle. It's been in the back of my mind for the past couple of days. I wouldn't say it's consuming me, or affecting my judgment, but I wish I could have been there to say I care before they ended it all. Could it be because I have a close friend who faced the same struggle and almost met the same fate?
