Is it normal to love someone for 4 years if you've never dated them?

I've liked this guy for four years straight. We went to middle school together and attend high school together as well, freshman year someone told him I liked him. I'm openly gay but he however isn't, how do I know what he's doing is a a sign that he wants to try things out or not? Without directly asking?

    I was in LOOOOOVE with a guy 11yrs in secret ppl told him but we never acted on it with even a date..last year in Jan. We gave us a try it's been wonderful & we are getting married this year!!
