Is it normal to listen to music you wrote and recorded?

I write songs and record them. I usually use a four-track machine, but one night i got really drunk and used a portable walkman type recorder, just to let a prospective bass player know what to expect from me. i recorded it live and pretended like my closest friends were there and i was playing a show, exclusively for those who have been supportive of me. it's really lo-fi but with lots of soul and improvisation. when i listened to it the next day i couldn't believe it was me and kind of fell in love with it. i've listened to it almost everyday since then and have given lots of copies away. i like to crank it loudly and listen while i get ready for work. i put it on for background noise while working or reading or cooking sometimes. I was wondering if this was normal or am i just a narcissist? i believe john frusciante said he made the kind of music he wanted to hear and shared it with his friends when he was young, and i think r. stevie moore did this as well, check them out. it does make me feel weird to listen to my music in front of others, and have only done this once because i was in a room with seven friends and only had two copies to give away and they all wanted to hear it. so let me know, is this normal? if you comment maybe you could tell me if you play music or not to help me know where you're coming from.

Yeah, I sometimes listen back to things I wrote (both music and words), although I'm overly critical of it all. In a million words, I think there is maybe just one sentence that couldn't be improved. I wish I could enjoy things I'd created but, in some ways, I think being so critical drives me on to improve.

I think it is perfectly normal as long as that is not ALL you listen to. If you refuse to listen to any other music it might start to get a little narcissistic.

    • i know how to break paragraphs, i just don't. i could have made it all one huge sentence and probably would have if i were trying to piss off my english teacher. thanks for the comment though.

It's a very good way to hear and critique yourself. I'd say it's perfectly normal, just don't get cocky and overly self confident about it haha

    • yeah, i just enjoy the music i guess. not too cocky though, when i go visit people i only play my songs if someone hands me a guitar and asks me to play. and i'm usually quick to pass it on to somebody else after a song or two.
